Antigone is a 1961 Greek film adaptation of the Ancient Greek tragedy Antigone by Sophocles. It stars Irene Papas in the title role and was directed by Yorgos Javellas.

The film follows the story of the play closely, but ends differently–instead of Creon retiring back to the palace as in the play, the film ends with Creon retiring his kingship and exiling himself out of Thebes.

It was entered into the 11th Berlin International Film Festival.

Antonis and Eleni are an unmarried couple, which live in a traditional neighbourhood in Athens. Antonis is a literate employee of a ministry but Eleni is an illiterate housewife from a poor family. Due to their social divide between them, Antonis underrates Eleni and treats her like a slave. Nevertheless, she carries on loving him and serving him. But the situation changes after their marriage. Eleni starts to emancipate and she claims equality. Antonis doesn't put up with the new situation and asks divorce. Several years later the two former spouses are met in the demolition of their old house. They remember their old lives and decide to give their relationship even one chance. The film features the characters mixing the humour with emotion and nostalgia, filled also with the beautiful pictures of Athens at those years.

The film begins in 1536 when Henry VIII (Richard Burton) considers whether or not he should sign the warrant for the execution of his second wife, Anne Boleyn: then, in a long flashback which takes up virtually the entire film, the whole truth is revealed. Starting in 1527, Henry has a problem: he reveals his dissatisfaction with his wife, Catherine of Aragon (Irene Papas). The Trojan Women was one of a trilogy of plays dealing with the suffering created by the Trojan Wars.
