Synopsis

Dans un petit village, entre Rome et Naples, les Alliés sont sur le point de faire leur entrée triomphale. D'abord réticent, Attilio finit par se laisser convaincre. Malgré tout, il semble que les Alliés soient encore bien loin et Crippa, le représentant du Fascio, envoie en avant le fils de Cappellaro (qui est dans la vraie vie le fils de l'acteur français) et fait savoir qu'il a convoqué une bande de chemises noires pour rétablir l'ordre. Cappellaro fait en sorte que son fils reste dans le village en le cachant dans la cave, mais pendant la nuit Crippa est assassiné.

In 1961, Antonio La Puzza emigrated from Acerra for lack of money in Berlin then divided between Western and Soviet searching for Giuseppe "Peppino" Pagliuca (a Neapolitan "magliaro" who emigrated to Germany years earlier). There he meets two guys, including the daughter of Admiral Attila Canarinis (former Nazi military very much like La Puzza) that, instead of helping the recruit to the tune of 20 million lire: the poor accept Antonio La Puzza and pretends the Admiral, and in the court of the U.S. base to be found innocent, even if not immediately believed, so the Americans release spiandolo in his every move.

In a town, near Naples, in 1900, the cobbler Agostino Miciacio is accused by tenants of his apartment building to be crazy. In fact Augostino is a lively man, mocked by everyone because he is messy. He is very devoted to St. John beheaded, so Agostino lights a candle every night in a small chapel in the courtyard. But some of the oil in the wax necessary for the luminary, disappears every night. It is a fact that Augostino does not tolerate theft, but he does not know that behind these thefts continue, there is a gang of thugs. Meanwhile Agostino, in addition to following the case of oil stolen, must fight against the daughter Serafina who has fallen in love with a poor young lamplighter. But he also has to fight against his wife Concetta, authoritative and cruel woman, so he hopes that St. John makes a grace for him, taking away her voice.
