Sawan Bhadon is a 1970 Bollywood film produced and directed by Mohan Segal. The film was the debut film for its lead pair Rekha and Navin Nischol. The other cast of note in the film are Jayshree T., Iftekhar and Ranjeet. The music is by Sonik Omi. This was also Ranjeet's debut film. A couple of the songs from the film became popular.

The film is remade in Tamil as 'Veetukku Oru Pillai' (A son for every home) starring Jaishankar.

Synopsis

Vikram (Navin Nischol) is a man from a wealthy family living in Europe. He has a step-sister Dolly and step-mother Ms.Sulochana who are very cunning and greedy and cheat Vikram's money during his absence from India. Vikram decides to come back to India which disturbs the plans of Sulochana

While returning from Army Base, Captain Ajit Kapoor stops over at a rest-house, where there is a party on, and he meets a charming, vivacious young lady. When he reaches home, his guardian, Father Joseph, wants him to get married. When Joseph(Nazir Hussain) accompanies Ajit to see the girl, whose name is Kanchan, Ajit is thrilled to find out that it is the very same girl he met at the rest-house. Ajit indicates his approval, and the stage is set for them to get married. It is then that Ajit finds out that the Kanchan is not the girl he had met, but her twin-sister. Kanchan is heart-broken at this, but wants her sister to be happy. Ajit is even more happy when he finally meets Kamini, who also recognizes him. She tries to put a spanner in the works by emotionally attacking Ajit.

Prakash (Navin Nischol), a librarian, lives with his daughter. One day, his friend and private detective Captain Usman (Suresh Oberoi) visits him and gives him a diary along with a dagger (Khanjar) to safeguard them. He also informs about their importance for a case under his investigation and threatens by some gangsters about them. Soon after this, Prakash learns that Usman is murdered. He also receives a call from a stranger enquiring about Usman's diary and the dagger. Meanwhile, a smart girl named Preeti (Reena Roy) starts to flirt and get closer to him to know about the diary and the dagger. Prakash notices her acts, illustrates to the police the story of Usman's diary, the dagger, his murder and Preeti's attempts for them. They instruct him to follow her to learn about the gangsters she works with. Upon his insistence, Preeti informs about her activities under the instructions of Prince (Amjad Khan). Soon Prince learns about her behaviour and kills her. After few days, his brother-in-law Ramesh (Shekhar Kapur), married to his younger sister Jyothi (Rita Bhaduri), is also found murdered. Disturbed by these mysterious murders leading to the dagger, Prakash and his magician friends Jagat (Mehmood) and Rasvanti (Jashree T.) visit an old town Udaigarh, famous for Swamiji (Amjad Khan). One mystery leads to a deeper mystery and a series of thrilling events unravel the mystery of the khanjar.

Thakur Jaswant Singh rules over the region with an iron hand. He has no pity or empathy for the poor, all he is interested in is their money, their women, and alcohol. After the passing away of his dad, he assumes total control over the region, and increases the taxes. One day while walking across the hallway, he trips over the wet floor, and falls down. He gets up angrily and assaults the old woman, Ramvati, who was washing the floor. His abuse is interrupted by the arrival of Ramvati's son, Jeeva, who intervenes. Jaswant is ready to shoot him down, but Jaswant's mom prevents him from doing so. Word gets around that Jeeva is in the bad books of the Thakur, and soon a number of people start conspiring against Jeeva. The next day Jeeva is summoned before the village council and asked to explain his involvement in the death of a cow. Jeeva has no satisfactory explanation, and he is asked to leave the village immediately with his mother. Jeeva refuses to do so, and is severely beaten, and thrown out. Shortly thereafter his mother passes away, and Jeeva decides to avenge her death by bringing about the downfall of Jaswant Singh. In order to do this, he becomes a dacoit. Jeeva swears on the holy river Ganga to wipe out Jaswant Singh and his men, without knowing his decision will bring him into conflict with the police, and with the honest people from the very community he was exiled from.

Chiranjeev (Raj Kapoor) lives a wealthy lifestyle along with his father, Kashiram (Raj Mehra), and three siblings: two sisters, one of whom is dumb, and a younger brother. While on a trip, his friend, Mohan (Om Prakash), falls ill due to alcohol, and gets treated at an Ashram. This is where Chiranjeev meets with an employee, Sharada (Meena Kumari), who lives a poor lifestyle with her father, Ram Sharan. Chiranjeev and Sharada fall in love with each other, and he promises to get his father's permission and return to get married to her. On his way home he has an accident, and though he does survive after being treated by tribal people, he returns to the Ashram several days later and is informed that Sharada is now married to a wealthy and much older man. Heart-broken and devastated, Chiranjeev returns home only to get another shock: the male Sharada has married is none other than his very own father. Depressed and deeply frustrated, he takes to alcohol in a big way. Sharada talks him out of this, he repents and on her insistence, marries Chanchal (Shyama), who come from a reputed family background. Things then get complicated when Chanchal finds that her husband and his stepmother had been in love before and may not have got over their feelings for each other.
