The film was based on the novel The Cook by Harry Kressing, with the screenplay written by Hugh Wheeler. Directed by Harold Prince for Cinema Center Films, the film began shooting on 30 June 1969 and was originally released by National General Pictures in July 1970. Lansbury was nominated for the Golden Globe Award for Best Actress – Motion Picture Musical or Comedy.
In the UK, the film was retitled Black Flowers for the Bride (subtitle: A Comedy of Evil) and released in May 1971. In 1990, a VHS of the film was issued.
Synopsis
A handsome young stranger, Konrad, is fascinated by a castle in an Austrian town. He tries to get a job working for Countess Herthe von Ornstein, who inherited it from her late husband, but due to financial difficulties the castle is closed.Actors

Fredrik Egerman (Len Cariou) is very happy in his marriage to an 18-year-old virgin, Anne (Lesley-Anne Down). However, Anne has nervously protected her virginity for the whole eleven months of marriage, and being a bit restless, Fredrik goes to see an old flame, the famous actress, Desirée Armfeldt (Elizabeth Taylor). Desirée, who is getting tired of her life, is thinking of settling down, and sets her sights on Fredrik, despite his marriage, and her own married lover Count Carl-Magnus Mittelheim (Laurence Guittard). She gets her mother to invite the Egermans to her country estate for the weekend. In 1931 Berlin, young American Sally Bowles performs at the Kit Kat Klub. A new British arrival in the city, Brian Roberts, moves into the boarding house where Sally lives. A reserved academic and writer, Brian gives English lessons to earn a living while completing his doctorate. Sally tries seducing Brian and suspects he may be gay. Brian tells Sally that on three previous occasions he has tried to have physical relationships with women, all of which failed. They become friends, and Brian witnesses Sally's anarchic, bohemian life in the last days of the German Weimar Republic. The film starts with a monologue by an unnamed narrator explaining the synopsis of the film with images from the end of the film. Emeka Nwosu (Ramsey Nouah) was stuck in a traffic presumely caused by the death of a pedestrian, when his concubine, Isabella (Tunde Aladese), sent him a text reminding him to get home early so they can have fun together. City hustlers Charlie (OC Ukeje) and Chichi (Gold Ikponmwosa) arrive the scene with the former taking advantage of unsuspecting road-watchers and stealing a phone after a fight broke out on the crowded road. Bello (Ali Nuhu) is a diligent and honest civil servant, whose only "crime" at the office has been his refusal to partake in any of the corrupt practice by his co-workers. His raucous boss uses every opportunity to disrespect him. During a workday, Bello is given more jobs to do by his colleagues after work hours. Two mentally ill women who are clearly suffering from not otherwise specified delusional disorders, a mother and a (grown) daughter, live together in a secluded mansion. They are in a relationship and both are recognised for their beauty.
