As radio show host Erica Bain (Jodie Foster) and her fiancé David (Naveen Andrews) are walking their dog at night at Stranger's Gate in New York's Central Park, they are attacked by three violent criminals who film the whole attack on their phones. In the late 21st century, global warming has flooded coastlines, drastically reducing the human population. There is a new class of robots called Mecha, advanced humanoids capable of emulating thoughts and emotions. David (Haley Joel Osment), a prototype model created by Cybertronics of New Jersey, is designed to resemble a human child and to display love for its human owners. They test their creation with one of their employees, Henry Swinton (Sam Robards), and his wife Monica (Frances O'Connor). The Swintons' son, Martin (Jake Thomas), was placed in suspended animation until a cure can be found for his rare disease which is caused by the Sinclair virus. Initially frightened of David, Monica eventually warms enough to him to activate his imprinting protocol, which irreversibly causes David to have an enduring childlike love for her. He is also befriended by Teddy (Jack Angel), a robotic teddy bear, who takes it upon himself to care for David's well-being.

Patsy, she preferred to remain single and independent but spent his life living muse to countless men hook succeeding one after the other over the years, and both, real "fashion victims", today totally dissolute life completely "crazy" resolutely eccentric, to the discouragement of the family of Eddie. The life of Eddie and Patsy is only champagne at any time of day or night, invaded atmosphere of tobacco smoke joints, cocaine, luxury toilets ... and parasitism by attending fashion stars and the show. Eddie would lead Safrane, his daughter, in the tornado of his "values" in light years of work and family life. But this is still a virgin at 17 and prepares the Polytechnic entrance exam. In 1988 a US ballistic missile submarine, the USS Montana, sinks near the edge of the Cayman Trough after an accidental encounter with an unidentified submerged object. As Soviet ships and submarines head toward the area in an attempt to salvage the sub, and with a hurricane moving in, the Americans decide that the quickest way to mount a rescue is to insert a SEAL team onto the Deep Core, a privately owned, experimental underwater oil drilling platform, located 1,700 feet (518 meters) below sea level, which will serve as their base of operations. The designer of the platform, Dr. Lindsey Brigman, insists on accompanying the SEAL team, even though her estranged husband, Virgil "Bud" Brigman, is currently serving as the platform's foreman.
