Despite the English title, in truth there are two French Detectives, based in Rouen. Verjeat is an aging, been-around gumshoe, while Lefevre is his young, callow and cynical associate. The two detectives don't like each other much at first, but this will change. Their current assignment is getting the goods on a corrupt politician. During an election, a fight between the supporters of two of the candidates. In the melee political thugs murder an opponent's volunteer and also kill a cop. The officer has time to warn his colleagues that the killer is Portor, a well-known thug whose brother is campaigning on behalf of law and order candidate Lardatte. Chief inspector Verjeat believes the politician who hired the thugs is as guilty as the murderous goon. His pursuit of Portor is hampered by Lardatte, for whom he has a personal dislike and misses no opportunity to humiliate. Verjeat's pursuit of Lardatte gets him a warning from his superiors. When he embarrasses Lardatte while disarming a hostage (the dead volunteer's father), Verjeat is told he's being promoted and transferred within a week to a posting outside of Rouen. This will take him off the case. As a result he then finds himself with a very short time to capture Portor. Verjeat is sure that his upcoming transfer is courtesy of Lardatte and his police contacts. He speeds up his hunt for the goon and, with Lefévre, he engineers a complicated scheme to buy more time before the transfer.

Hubert Jacquin, obstétricien à la retraite, vient de perdre sa femme, et refuse la proposition de son ami Samuel de se changer les idées. Pour l'aider à entretenir son grand appartement parisien, il contacte une femme de ménage par le biais d'une annonce chez le boulanger voisin, mais à la suite d'une erreur, il voit débarquer chez lui Manuéla, une jeune postulante à une colocation. Refusant de voir bousculer ses habitudes et son chagrin, il la met dehors. Il la retrouve quelques instants plus tard au pied de son immeuble dans une altercation avec son logeur du moment. Il s'interpose mais prend un mauvais coup. Manuéla aide Hubert à remonter chez lui, qui accepte finalement de lui louer une chambre en échange du ménage de son appartement et qu'elle fasse ses courses. Si ces services sont remplis sans grand succès, la cohabitation entre eux s'établit de manière positive.

Paul Hackett, a word processor, meets Marcy Franklin in a local cafe in New York. They discuss their common interest in Henry Miller. Marcy leaves Paul her number and informs him that she lives with a sculptor named Kiki Bridges, who makes and sells plaster of Paris paperweights resembling cream cheese bagels. Later in the night, under the pretense of buying a paperweight, Paul visits Marcy, taking a cab to her apartment. On his way to visit Marcy, a $20 bill is blown out the window of the cab, leaving him with only some spare pocket change. The cab driver is furious that he cannot pay, thereby beginning the first in a long series of misadventures for Paul that turn hostile through no fault of his own. At the apartment Paul meets the sculptor Kiki and Marcy, and comes across a collection of photographs and medications which imply that Marcy is severely disfigured from burns on her legs and torso. As a result of this implication, and as a result of a strained conversation with Marcy, Paul abruptly slips out of the apartment.

Jacob Petersen manages an Indian orphanage. A Danish corporation offers a substantial donation to maintain the orphanage, with the caveat that Jacob return to Denmark (where he grew up) to personally receive the funds.
