The film relates a historical case of alleged identity theft. Martin Guerre leaves his young wife in a small French village to go fight in a war, and to travel. Many years later, an older man (played by Depardieu) claiming to be Martin returns to resume his life. The man is initially acknowledged and welcomed by the wife, family, and friends because he seems to know the intimate details of Martin's life. As time passes, the villagers grow suspicious that he is an impostor, and he is put on trial, with his life at stake.

Roger Joly, français marié, père de trois enfants, mène une vie comblée de bonheur familial et jouit d'une excellente situation professionnelle comme vendeur de voitures de luxe. Amoureux de la langue française et amateur de poésie, il est également excellent pianiste lorsqu'il accompagne sa fille à son cours de ballet. Mais à la suite d'un banal contrôle de police, commence un acharnement judiciaire contre lui : il est accusé d'avoir usurpé l'identité d'un français détenu à Alger, alors qu'il y était lui aussi emprisonné. Le juge d'instruction, un homme à la froide détermination, l'accuse de s'appeler en réalité Aziz Ben Salah, d'être tunisien et d'avoir vécu en France en situation irrégulière. Mais Joly passe son temps à nier, alors que les preuves de son imposture et les témoignages de la famille Ben Salah contre lui sont accablants.

The film tells the dramatized true story of Philippe Berre, an actual Frenchman with a reputation as an impostor. In the film, much as actual events, Monsieur Berre goes to a small town, passing himself off as a civil engineer, and claims that the government has decided to start previously scrapped plans for the construction of a highway. Albert et Alain Ménard-Lacoste sont frères jumeaux. Accueilli comme "Alain", l'héritier d'Albert, sa femme, Madeleine, croyant son mari réellement mort et n'agissant que par intérêt, veut épouser son nouveau "beau-frère". Les choses se compliquent lorsque Rodolphe V, toujours endormi, est enlevé le même jour par le mercenaire Rupert de Hentzau ; en outre, Rassendyll tombe amoureux de la Princesse Flavia, promise en mariage au prince héritier.
