Marino Pacileo is a solitary man living in the Vasto area of Naples, a multiethnic suburb close to the train station. He is nicknamed "Gorbaciof" as, like the Soviet leader, has a port-wine stain on his forehead. He is a cashier in the prison at Poggioreale, using his job as a means of funding his gambling addiction. He plays poker in a makeshift gambling house at the back of a Chinese restaurant, and here he meets Lila, daughter of the restaurant's owner. Gorbaciof is fascinated by Lila, whom he starts stalking; and Lila finds herself attracted to this strange man who rescued her from two violent teenagers. In spite of the language barrier (Lila doesn't speak Italian), they start seeing each other.

Abbas Mahadjir était professeur de français en République centrafricaine. Il a fui avec sa famille l'une des guerres civiles qui ont frappé son pays. Il est hanté par le souvenir de sa femme, tuée au cours de leur fuite. Il vit désormais en France avec ses deux jeunes enfants, Asma et Yacine, qui sont scolarisés. Il travaille sur les marchés où il a rencontré Carole, une fleuriste d'origine polonaise avec qui il a noué une relation. Quand sa demande de statut de réfugié au nom du droit d'asile est rejetée par l'OFPRA, il engage un recours. Lorsque celui-ci est à son tour rejeté, il se voit signifier une obligation de quitter le territoire français. Au bout des 30 jours réglementaires, n'ayant pas déposé de recours auprès du président du tribunal administratif, désormais sans travail, sans logement, « sans papier », il trouve refuge chez Carole avec ses enfants. Quand la police convoque Carole au commissariat et l'informe des peines encourues pour l'aide au séjour des étrangers en situation irrégulière, il préfère prendre la fuite avec ses enfants sans laisser d'adresse. Carole tente en vain de retrouver leur trace dans la jungle de Calais, démantelée quelques heures plus tôt.

Shlomo, an Ethiopian boy, is placed by his Christian mother with an Ethiopian Jewish woman whose child has died. Après La Forteresse, qui décrivait l'accueil des demandeurs d’asile en Suisse, Fernand Melgar porte son regard vers la fin du parcours migratoire. Au Centre de détention administrative de Frambois à Genève, des hommes sont privés de liberté dans l’attente d’un renvoi. Requérants d’asile déboutés, condamnés étrangers ayant purgé leur peine ou sans papiers, ils sont sommés de partir après, pour certains, avoir passé plusieurs années en Suisse, travaillé, payé des impôts, fondé une famille. Leur incarcération peut durer jusqu’à 18 mois. Dans ce huis clos, la tension monte au fil des jours. D’un côté des gardiens bienveillants, de l’autre des détenus vaincus par la peur et le stress. Des rapports d’amitié et de haine, de respect et de révolte se nouent jusqu’à l’annonce du renvoi vécu comme une trahison. Ceux qui refusent de partir et susceptible d'opposer une forte résistance physique sont menottés, ligotés et installés de force dans un avion pour un « vol spécial » qui se déroule la plupart du temps dans la détresse et l’humiliation.

In a village in eastern Turkey, tales of the economic success of Turks in Switzerland inspire Haydar to convince his wife Meryem that they must go. The three set off for Istanbul, Milan, and Switzerland, stowing away on a ship.
