Head begins at the dedication of a bridge. A politician is supposed to give a speech but there is a barrage of feedback from the microphone. Suddenly the Monkees (further) interrupt the ceremony by running through the assembled officials to sound of horns and sirens. The rest of the film has no overriding plot but consists of a series of vignettes highlighting the unpleasant aspects of being public figures. There is a conflict and a resolution, but the film is essentially plotless; as the opening song related: "We hope you like our story/Although there isn't one/That is to say, there's many/That way, there is more fun!" Rather, it is a seemingly stream of consciousness stringing-together of musical numbers, satires of various film genres, elements of psychedelia, and references to topical issues such as the Vietnam War. The distorted consciousness and psychedelia elements resemble an LSD trip.. Recurring images include a black box in which the group are trapped, a desert location, and a gigantic Victor Mature.
Skeeter Bronson (Adam Sandler) is a hotel handyman who was promised by his father, Marty Bronson (Jonathan Pryce), to be the manager of the family hotel. A mysophobe named Barry Nottingham (Richard Griffiths) agreed to keep that promise when the Bronson family sold their hotel to him—then built a new hotel instead. Thirty years later, when the story begins, Skeeter is the hotel's handyman while management is held by Kendall (Guy Pearce). Barry's new hotel, the Sunny Vista Nottingham Hotel, is a hit, but he's got plans to build an even more elaborate hotel, one designed around a theme that he's keeping secret.
Peter Banning is a successful corporate lawyer who spends more time at work than with his wife Moira and children Jack and Maggie. The Bannings fly to London to visit Moira's grandmother, an older Wendy Darling, to celebrate her charity work for orphans, which once included Peter. During the visit, Peter is distracted by phone calls from his office and on one occasion, shouts at his children when they interrupt him, leading Moira to throw his cellphone out of an open window. Later, while Peter, Moira, and Wendy attend a banquet ceremony hosted by Great Ormond Street Hospital, a strange presence abducts Jack and Maggie. Tootles, another of Wendy's orphans who lives at her house, informs Peter that Captain Hook took the children to Neverland. Peter dismisses Tootles' warning and calls the police instead. With no sign of the children anywhere, Wendy informs Peter that he is actually Peter Pan and that he lost his memories of Neverland when he decided to stay in London with Wendy many years ago. Once again, Peter dismisses these claims and waits for the police to find his children.
A ship loses all means of navigation in a storm. The crew become increasingly desperate as food and water run out. The captain, Kamegoro (Taiji Tonoyama), prays to the sailor's god Kompira to rescue them and rations their food and water. Jack Carlisle is a disillusioned 13-year-old boy. His mother is always away at work since his father left. He decides to run away, as he feels his mom won't miss him. As he is ready to leave, his nanny convinces him to read a 'magic book' that belongs to her. The book is about a pirate adventure on Magic Island. As Jack reads the book, he is sucked into the world and goes on numerous adventures with Prince Morgan, while fleeing the evil Blackbeard the Pirate. He is even saved by Lily, a beautiful mermaid, whom he falls in love with. Lily is given the power to turn into a human and accompanies Jack on his adventure. Along the way, Jack encounters sand sharks, a tree that grows the favorite food of the person who climbs it, and a cursed temple full of treasure. Jack also uses items he brought along with him in his "magic" bag to stop the pirates. Eventually Jack is able to return home. He wakes up to his loving mother, and finds that his jeans are now torn and frayed and the flag on Prince Morgan's ship has transformed into his bag—signs that his adventure may have actually happened.
Ariel, a sixteen-year-old mermaid princess, is dissatisfied with underwater life and is curious about the human world. With her best friend Flounder, Ariel collects human artifacts and goes to the surface of the ocean to visit Scuttle the seagull, who offers very inaccurate knowledge of human culture. She ignores the warnings of her father King Triton, the ruler of Atlantica, and his adviser and court composer Sebastian that contact between merpeople and humans is forbidden.
The movie opens in live action Denmark. From there, a narrator explains to the audience how Denmark is a popular tourist destination. He also states that many storytellers were born in Denmark, and the most famous one is Hans Christian Andersen. After explaining how this man wrote beautiful stories, the narrator finishes the explanations by mentioning that Andersen's most famous story, "The Little Mermaid," originated in Denmark. After a brief shot of a live action ocean and the opening title card (with a mermaid song in the background), the scene dissolves to 2D hand-drawn anime.
