Chalam was an actor from the 1950s to the 1980s. He was born on May 18, 1929, in a good family. He played versatile roles in the Telugu film industry as a hero, comedian, character actor, producer, art director, and set director. He was considered as an Andhra Dilip Kumar. He acted with popular actors and comedians N. T. Rama Rao, Akkineni Nageswara Rao, Relangi Venkata Ramaiah, B. Padmanabham and Ramana Reddy in many movies.

He produced and acted in hit movies such as Sambarala Rambabu in 1970, Mattilo Manikyam in 1971. Mattilo Manikyam this film won National Film Award For Best Feature Film in Telugu. He was a very close friend of fellow Telugu actors Shoban Babu and Chandra Mohan.

Biography

Korada Surya Chalam, better known as Ramana Chalam, the later day Telugu cinema’s popular comedian-cum-hero Chalam, shot to fame with Dasi, his second movie in the role of Subbarao. Chalam debuted with film Naa Chellelu. After marrying Ramanakumari, he changed his name to Ramana Chalam. Ramana kumari died on 1964 in a fire accident. After Chalam married 'Urvasi' Sharada who was a co-star in her debut film Tandrulu Kodukulu. They divorced later on.

Bhagwan Shri Sai Baba lived in British India. He was initially shunned by both Hindus and Muslims, especially by Hindu Bal Bhate. Sai was a Muslim and Bal Bhate forbade him to enter any Temple. Rohila, a Muslim, who thought Sai was desecrating the local Masjid by performing Hindu prayers and incantations and attempted to kill Sai. Then he saw both the Allah and Bhagwan in Sai and became a devotee. When Sai was ready to give up his body and resurrect himself after 3 days, just like Lord Jesus, a disbelieving Bal had wanted Sai's body to be cremated within 24 hours - only to find out that Sai had indeed risen, and also became his devotee. Bhagoti, a leper, who was cured by Sai became his follower. Though Sai had no relations, he did call Tatya's mother his sister; Tatya his maternal nephew; a devotee named Laxmi as his daughter, and an elderly woman as his mother. Sai displayed his true form and opulence to another devotee, Nana Chandorkar. Sai lived in a rebuilt Masjid and urged his devotees to pray God, as the Creator and to love and respect all living beings. He begged for alms daily so that he could collect sins and wash them away. He always uttered 'Allah Bhala Kare' and 'Bhagwan Bhala Kare' to both Muslims and Hindus alike. He appeared in a multitude forms to his deities (Lord Jesus, Guru Nanak Devji, Allah, Bhagwan Shri Ganesh) to cater to the various tastes of devotees. Sai was also fond of Nanavli, a mentally challenged devotee, who often challenged Sai. He was one of the few who really understood and accepted Sai as Vishnu's Avatar. Sai appeared simultaneously in a wealthy man's and Nana's dreams and called upon them to construct a Mandir of Bhagwan Shri Krishna. While the construction was under way, Sai prophesied the death of Tatya. Shortly thereafter while bequeathing the nine coins symbolizing nine virtues to Laxmi (which depict Sravan, Kirtan, Smaran, Padaseva, Archana, Namaskar, Dastan, Samveta, & Atmanivrdan) Sai was ready to demonstrate to his devotees why they should not worry about Tatya's impending demise.

Yugandhar (N.T. Rama Rao) is the most wanted criminal and killer. He is brave as well as intelligent, so the police force always fails at nabbing him. He kills Ramesh, who is one of his gang members, when he finds out that he's also an informant to the police. His fiancee Kamini (Jayamalini) tries to avenge his death, but Yugandhar kills her. Thereafter, his sister Jaya (Jayasudha) takes judo and karate lessons and infiltrates the mob, in order to avenge her brother's death. But before she gets a chance and unbeknownst to her, Yugandhar is fatally shot during a police encounter and later he dies. The Police head is soon forced to bring a look alike of Yugandhar in order to arrest Yugandhar's gang members.

This is a story set to pre-independence period in India. A village landlord Kanakayya (Rao Gopal Rao) marries Sita (Jayasudha), who is young enough to be his daughter, with the help of village karaNam (Nutan Prasad). However, he restricts her a lot after the marriage. Sita's brother Bangaram (Chalam) comes from the town and eyes Bangari (Reshmi Roy), Kanakayya's deaf and dumb servant Devudu's (Chandramohan) sister. Bangari is in love with Narasimha (Chiranjeevi), another servant of Kanakayya. Bangaram rapes Bangari. It is an old classical family drama. Sundaram (Ramakrishna) is a rich businessman and he has an younger brother Sekhar (Chandra Mohan) is a college going guy who loves his brother so much. Sundaram's mother-in-law Parvatham (S. Varalakshmi) who cares for his assets and shows her dominating character on Sekhar and Sundaram. She bets with Sekhar that she would separate him from his brother and puts some conditions that he should not tell his brother about the bet to prove his strength. Parvatham second son-in-law (Chalam) identifies that his mother-in-law has moved to Sundaram's house. Soon second son-in-law comes to he house and places a bet with Parvatham that she only should reveal that he is the son-in-law of her. Since then both of them starts proving their capacity to win in the bet. The film revolves around who wins the bet and how it brings about a change in Parvathamma's beliefs.

Rangadu (ANR) is called 'Poolarangadu', because of his purity of life. His father Veerayya is a manager at a mill, and is framed for the murder of one of the partners, Purushotham. He is sent to jail for a crime he didn't commit. Rangadu works hard to get his sister Padma educated. She marries a doctor, Prasad, who happens to be Purushotham's son. When he finds out she is Veerayya's daughter, he leaves her. Rangadu is enraged and beats the guy who informs Prasad. Rangadu is sent to jail. There he meets his father, learns about his innocence and vows to get him out. Once Rangadu is released, he earns the goodwill of the other two partners and finally exposes them. Veerayya is released, Rangadu marries his lover Venkata Laxmi (Jamuna) and Prasad takes Padma back.

Gummadi is a wealthy man. He has two daughters. His father is Relangi. Gummadi loves his elder daughter Sundari (Kanchana) dearly and appoints a Private Master (Ram Mohan) for tuition at home. Krishna (Krishna) wanted to become very rich and is prepared to do anything with the help of his friends Vijayalalitha and Chalam. During the private tuitions Sundari and teacher started loving each other. They decided to marry with the permission of their elders. Krishna traps Gummadi and wanted to become his son-in-law. There is a friction between the family members. Gummadi is ready to forget he help from the father of Private Master and decides to marry Sundari with Krishna. Grandfather Relangi helps Sundari and Private Master to marry in a Temple. To ease the tension and save the family prestige, her sister Sukanya convinces Krishna for marrying her. Gummadi sends Sundari out of home. They live happily in poverty, while Krishna gradually making money. Finally Grandfather with the help of Private master and Sundari exposes Krishna and his friends and the film ends happily.
