John Nicholas "Dick" Foran (June 18, 1910 – August 10, 1979) was an American actor, known for his performances in western musicals and for playing supporting roles in dramatic pictures.

Au cinéma, Dick Foran participe à quatre-vingt neuf films américains (dont des westerns), notamment pour Warner Bros. et Universal Pictures, de 1934 à 1967. Un de ses rôles les plus connus est celui du Sergent Quincannon, dans Le Massacre de Fort Apache (1948) de John Ford, aux côtés de John Wayne (à noter qu'il retrouvera les deux hommes en 1963, avec un petit rôle dans La Taverne de l'Irlandais). Parmi ses autres partenaires au cinéma, citons Humphrey Bogart, James Cagney, Bette Davis, Irene Dunne et Errol Flynn.À la télévision, entre 1950 et 1969, il collabore à deux téléfilms (en 1956 et 1966) et à soixante-quatre séries (notamment plusieurs séries-westerns).

The film is a morality play in the guise of an action/comedy. It deals harshly (though not in an obvious way) with issues of racial bigotry, corporate connivance and greed, American beliefs of societal "superiority" and hypocrisy (i.e., the Boston shipping company considers carrying rum to be immoral, so they euphemistically refer to it as "West Indies goods"). Otherwise, Donovan's Reef is a light-hearted movie made in a period conforming, formulaic and sweetly naive manner (see "Critical Reception", below).

A brief opening prologue describes how in 1909 Robert Peary had trouble reaching the North Pole, while postulating that Peary would have been amazed to see how in just a few decades the very same pole had become a major thoroughfare for civilian and military shipping; a futuristic prediction of cargo-carrying atomic submarines then follows. One of those submarines is destroyed by a mysterious undersea light. The loss of this and several other cargo ships alarms the world. Governments temporarily close the polar route and convene an emergency meeting at The Pentagon.

1877. À Arlington, dans la vallée de Ruby Hills, tous les modestes propriétaires terriens ont été dépossédés de leurs biens par deux riches éleveurs, Chalk Reynolds et Walt Payne, qui continuent à se faire la guerre pour la mainmise totale sur la région de Ruby Hills. After the American Civil War, highly respected veteran Captain Kirby York (John Wayne) is expected to replace the outgoing commander at Fort Apache, an isolated U.S. cavalry post. York had commanded his own regiment during the Civil War and was well-qualified to assume permanent command. To the surprise and disappointment of the company, command of the regiment was given to Lieutenant Colonel Owen Thursday (Henry Fonda). Thursday, a West Point graduate, was a general during the Civil War. Despite his Civil War combat record, Lieutenant Colonel Thursday lacks experience with the Indians he is expected to oversee, and is an incompetent, arrogant and egocentric officer.
