John (Francis) Meehan, né le 13 juin 1902 à Tehachapi (comté de Kern, Californie), mort le 15 mai 1963 à Los Angeles — Quartier d'Hollywood (Californie), est un chef décorateur et directeur artistique américain, ayant œuvré au cinéma et à la télévision.

Biography

Après ses études à l'université de Californie du Sud, John Meehan débute au cinéma comme assistant des directeurs artistiques Hans Dreier et Robert Usher , sur L'Escadrille des jeunes de Mitchell Leisen, sorti en 1941. Il exercera de même sur trois autres films, le dernier étant Révolte à bord de John Farrow (1946), comme assistant d'Hans Dreier et Franz Bachelin .

Comme chef décorateur ou directeur artistique, il contribue à dix-neuf films américains (dont huit aux côtés d'Hans Dreier), le premier étant L'Or et les Femmes de Sidney Lanfield (1945, avec Veronica Lake et Sonny Tufts). Le dernier est Le Culte du cobra de Francis D. Lyon (1955, avec Richard Long et Marshall Thompson).

Dans l'intervalle, il collabore notamment à L'Héritière de William Wyler (1949, avec Olivia de Havilland et Montgomery Clift), Boulevard du crépuscule de Billy Wilder (1950, avec William Holden et Gloria Swanson) et Vingt mille lieues sous les mers de Richard Fleischer (1954, avec Kirk Douglas et James Mason), grâce auxquels il gagne trois fois l'Oscar de la meilleure direction artistique.

À partir de 1955 et jusqu'en 1962, John Meehan travaille exclusivement pour la télévision, sur deux téléfilms (diffusés en 1955 et 1960) et vingt-deux séries. Parmi elles, mentionnons Mike Hammer (quatre épisodes, 1959), Johnny Staccato (vingt épisodes, 1959-1960), et surtout Leave It to Beaver (cent-cinquante-huit épisodes, 1957-1962).

En 1963, l'année suivant sa dernière contribution au petit écran, il meurt prématurèment d'un cancer.

The plot of the film revolves around the life of seamen on board an anonymous aircraft carrier. Because of war time restrictions, the name of the aircraft carrier was disguised as "the Fighting Lady", although she was later identified as USS Yorktown. A few shots of aircraft landing were filmed aboard the Yorktown's sister ship USS Ticonderoga.

It's Tess' graduation day from "Miss Drakes School for Girls". During the choir's performance at the ceremony, Tess notices that her beautiful, divorcee mother, Louise Rayton Morgan isn't there. Louise, an editor for Modern Design Publication, is lying in Dr. Cannon's office from fainting due to being over-worked and stressed-out. At home after the graduation ceremony, Dr. Cannon has a talk with Louise's three daughters, Tess, Ilka and Alix. He tells them that their mother needs a vacation badly, but the only way she can relax is if she goes without the girls. The girls agree, but Louise is reluctant; however, the girls convince her to go. The girls see their mother off on her one month Cuban cruise. When the girls get home they discuss their mother, and believe if they bring their father back home it will make their mom happy and healthy again. In reality, Louise has kept the truth about their father from them. Their father was actually a very uncaring man, who left them and left Louise to raise the girls on her own. The girls go to see their father's boss, Robert Nelson to locate their father and bring him home. Meanwhile on Louise's Cuban cruise, she meets famed pianist and conductor, Jose Iturbi. Jose is immediately taken by Louise, but she plays hard to get, while having the time of her life. When Louise finally returns home, she has a secret to tell the girls, but, the girls have a secret too.

The story opens when a convicted murderer asks to make his confession on the day of his execution. The condemned man is visited by an old friend, Father Flanagan (Spencer Tracy) who runs a home for indigent men in Omaha, Nebraska. When the prison officials suggest that the condemned man owes the state a debt, Father Flanagan witnesses the condemned man's diatribe to prison officials and a reporter that describes his awful plight as a homeless and friendless boy who was a ward in state institutions. After the convicted man asks the officials to leave, Father Flanagan provides some comfort and wisdom. On the train back to Omaha, Father Flanagan is transformed in his humanitarian mission by revelations (echoed in the words) imparted by the condemned man's litany of hardships experienced as a child without friends or family as a ward of the state.
