Marcel (André Wilms) is an impoverished Parisian poet and playwright who is evicted from his extremely modest room after he is unable to pay rent for it. While roaming the streets of Paris, he meets Rodolfo (Matti Pellonpää), a painter from Albania who is almost equally poor and is in the country illegally. They quickly discover they are kindred spirits since they both share the same love for art without much regard for their worldly well-being. The two eventually make another friend in Schaunard (Kari Väänänen), an Irish composer who is now renting Marcel's former room. The three friends help each other in the daily struggle to survive by sharing whatever little money they have among each other in order to maintain a basic and simple standard of living.

The film is set in Rome in 1848 - 1849. En 1944, Georges (Thierry Frémont), petit voyou qui a servi dans la police allemande, commence à craindre l'arrivée des FFI. Son frère, milicien bossu, se suicide au cyanure. In a little village, lost at the bottom of a valley in the midst of mountains and deprived of sun for long months, an old man Anzerul (Charles Vanel), prophet and magician, announces the end of the world. According to his calculations the sun will not return to the village and the village will descend into an endless winter. The villagers give way, one after the other, to panic, piling up wood or giving themselves up to drink. Only Isabelle Antide (Catherine Mouchet), holds up against the hysteria. She urges them not to give in to terror, and to struggle against a damaging fatalism. Un tueur en série assassine des femmes en les assommant avec le combiné d'un téléphone et signe ses forfaits en plantant le cadran du téléphone sur le front des victimes. Le détective privé Marc Elbichon (de son vrai nom Marcel Bichon), en quête de notoriété, se lance dans la traque du tueur. Alain Durieux est dépressif. Il consulte le docteur Valois qui lui prescrit une nouvelle thérapie née de ses recherches : le « flashage ». Il s'agit, pour tout résumer, de ' couper le nerf de l'émotion '. Durieux renaît à la vie, une vie toute rose dont il ne perçoit définitivement plus la moindre grisaille. Un monstre est né autour duquel le malheur fait la ronde. On apprend bientôt que les " flashés " sont assez pour former une communauté, leur bonheur radieux fait des envieux. Les postulants sont désormais innombrables. Valois mesure l'horreur de son invention. Lâchement, et pour ne pas se désavouer, il choisit de se flasher aussi. Une forme de suicide puisque le Dr Valois connaît les effets desastreux de son traitement. L'épouse de Durieux devait y passer à son tour, mais dans un premier temps refusera : "je ne veux pas être heureuse". Durieux, victime d'un accident,une chute dans l’escalier alors qu’il est repoussé par Jeanne , ne quittera plus son fauteuil roulant ultra perfectionné mais roulera mieux encore leur ménage à trois dans une félicité immuable, la tête vide de toute angoisse, de tout doute, de toute sensibilité.À la demande d’Alain accidenté et paralysé, Jeanne accepte finalement que Pierre s’occupe d’elle ,ce qui sous entend entre autre d'être flashée. Le Dr Valois acceptera les honneurs , la légion d’honneur, ainsi que son cobaye Alain paralysé, l'ordre national du mérite, sans révéler que Pierre est devenu un monstre insensible et les singes sujets de ses expériences, tout à coup agressifs. Rares sont ceux qui sont conscients du désastre.
