Biography

Thornton Freeland débute comme assistant-réalisateur en 1924, puis réalise son premier film en 1929, avant vingt-cinq autres (dont deux également comme scénariste) jusqu'en 1949, année où il se retire définitivement. Durant sa carrière, on lui doit autant de films américains que de films britanniques, car il est installé au Royaume-Uni dans les années 1930 et 1940. Parmi eux, huit sont des films musicaux, dont Carioca (1933), sans doute le plus connu des films de Freeland, dans lequel le duo Ginger Rogers - Fred Astaire apparaît pour la première fois.

Thornton Freeland était l'époux de l'actrice et chanteuse américaine June Clyde (1909-1987), laquelle participe à un film de son mari en 1931, The Secret Witness.

Popular radio presenter Carroll Levis (playing himself), and Kay Sheldon (Carole Landis) find themselves entangled in a web of smuggling and murder. When a priceless "brass monkey" is stolen from a Japanese temple and smuggled into England, Levis encounters the eccentric Mr. Ryder-Harris (Ernest Thesiger), a Buddhist art connoisseur who's chasing the artefact, and will apparently stop at nothing to get it. The monkey is missing and there’s a suspicion murders are being committed in the hunt for its retrieval. With the help of the Discoveries radio talent, Levis attempts to avoid murderous henchman Herbert Lom, and foil Mr. Ryder-Harris's plans. Amongst all the mayhem, an array of musical and comedy performers audition for and appear on The Levis Hour, the hero's weekly radio program.

The epic film begins as a World War I American troop ship is torpedoed, and many soldiers are trapped below the deck. Robeson plays Jericho Jackson, a medical student drafted into the war.
