Detective Allen Gamble is a mild-mannered forensic accountant. Hot-tempered detective Terry 'Yankee Clipper' Hoitz is partnered with Allen ever since he mistakenly shot Derek Jeter during the World Series. David Owen, a New York lawyer, is constantly plagued by noise, particularly car alarms, but also burglar alarms and backup beepers. One night, Lucy (Judy Davis) gets a taxi to the home of author Harry Block (Woody Allen). She has just read Harry's latest novel. In the novel, the character Leslie (Julia Louis-Dreyfus) is having an affair with her sister's husband Ken (Richard Benjamin). Lucy is angry because the novel is patently based on her and Harry's own affair; as a result, everyone knows about it. Lucy pulls a gun out of her purse, saying she will kill herself. Joyce Martin is a transfer student at her new school. On her first day, she is seized up by the leader of the Hellcats, Connie. For her first test of initiation, Joyce is tricked into wearing slacks to school even though it is verboten by school policy. During class, the teacher asks Joyce to be the blackboard volunteer.
