Wanda Hawley (July 30, 1895 – March 18, 1963) was a veteran American actress of the silent screen films era. She entered the theatrical profession with an amateur group in Seattle, and later toured the U.S. and Canada as a singer. She co-starred with Rudolph Valentino in the 1922 The Young Rajah, and rose to stardom in a number of Cecil B. DeMille and director Sam Wood's films.

Biography

Wanda Hawley naît à Scranton (Pennsylvanie), mais déménage à Seattle (Washington) avec sa famille alors qu'elle n'est encore qu'une enfant. Après ses études, elle commence le théâtre avec un groupe d'amateurs de Seattle, puis effectue des tournées aux États-Unis et au Canada comme chanteuse.

Elle fait ses débuts au cinéma avec la Fox, puis rejoint peu après Famous Players-Lasky, où elle tourne avec notamment avec Douglas Fairbanks dans Mr. Fix-It (1918), ou avec Rudolph Valentino dans The Young Rajah (1922).

Mariam Hardy, young daughter Betty and husband Jim live in a log cabin in the desolate and frozen north, where Jim works their mining claim. Mariam longs for a normal life in the civilized world. Her husband returns one day with cash and the news that he has sold the claim. They board a steamer bound for Tacoma. Upon reaching the city, Jim is murdered and the cash is stolen by a mysterious steely-eyed stranger. Left penniless with a small child to care for, Mariam becomes a beggar. A toymaker (Semon) reads L. Frank Baum's book to his granddaughter. At 40, businesswoman Jane Vale (Pauline Frederick) falls in love with a much younger Robert Elliott (Malcolm McGregor), a employee from her factory. As described in a film publication, because of his flirtatious tendencies, young and wealthy society man John Floyd (Reid) is put on 30 days probation by his sweetheart Lucille Ledyard (Hawley). She gets him to assist her in settlement work. He ends up soothing Carlotta (Phillips), a young woman in a tough Italian section, when her husband Giacomo Polenta (Mayall) comes home and chases John with a knife. John escapes, but Giacomo, who is wanted by the police, takes a job as a butler in the Floyd home until he has a chance to skip to Italy. Carlotta comes to warn John, but Giacomo sees her and chases her down the street with a carving knife until he is nabbed by a police officer. Judge Hooker (Ogle), a friend of the Floyds, suggests that John seek safety in jail for 30 days until Giacomo leaves for Italy, so John goes and assaults a friend and rival, is arrested, and sent to jail by the judge. In jail he runs into Giacomo but is able to escape him. Giacomo is released, but waits for John outside the prison. Lucille and a friend visit John. When released, John is tied up by some criminals and put on a steamer headed for Italy. In the end, John and Lucille are reconciled.
