L'Île d'Alcatraz est une prison à sécurité maximum construite à l'épreuve des évasions. Clarence Carnes est le détenu qui a passé le plus grand nombre d'années à l'Île d'Alcatraz. Au cours de 18 ans en prison Clarence a fait partie de deux tentatives d'évasions audacieuses: une fusillade sanglante en 1946 et une évasion en 1953 qui a causé la fermeture de la prison. Mis en liberté conditionnelle en 1973, Carnes a raconté la véritable histoire de sa vie en prison, dans un livre puis, il a servi de conseiller technique pour ce film choc.

The film opens with Willy and Lacey as children watching their mother and her lover preparing to have sex. When the mother notices them, she has her boyfriend tie Willy to his headboard before sending Lacey to her room. Lacey frees Willy from his bed and Willy enters their room and repeatedly stabs his mother's boyfriend to death with a kitchen knife in front of a large mirror.

The plot of Sir Henry at Rawlinson End revolves around attempts to exorcise the ghost of Humbert, the brother of drunken aristocrat Sir Henry (Trevor Howard). Humbert was accidentally killed in a drunken duck-shooting incident whilst escaping trouserless from an illicit tryst. It transpires that Humbert's ghost will not rest until it is supplied with replacement trousers. Until then the ghost walks the corridors of Rawlinson End, often accompanied by that of Humbert's dog Gums which has repossessed its own body, now stuffed and mounted on a trolley.
