Renate Heiberg vit à Wasserburg am Inn et rêve de devenir photographe. Un jour, un pilote italien fait un atterrissage d'urgence. Renate saisit la chance, elle fait des photos. Le correspondant Rolf Bergmann la met en contact avec un journal de Berlin qui lui achète ses photos. Elles paraissent en une, Renate gagne 600 reichsmarks. Encouragée, la jeune femme s'en va vivre à Berlin et essaie d'obtenir un emploi avec plusieurs journaux. Mais elle essuie des refus. Seul le Berolina-Press l'engage. Seulement la première commande de Renate est un échec ; à cause d'un malentendu, les photos d'une course cycliste arrivent trop tard à la rédaction et ne correspondent plus aux exigences de la rédaction. Renate est renvoyé, puis elle rencontre son collègue Klaus Nolte, qui a déjà une réputation. Il soutient Renate et lui trouve un appartement.

At a convent in Austria in the 1930s, a spirited novice named Maria (Ruth Leuwerik) is sent by her mother superior to the estate of a widowed naval hero, Baron von Trapp (Hans Holt), to look after his seven unruly children. The baron is a stern disciplinarian and runs his household like a ship. When Maria arrives, she encourages the children to play games like other youngsters, and teaches them how to sing. When the baron discovers how Maria is ignoring his orders, he sends her back to the convent. Later, when he hears his children singing songs they've learned from Maria, his feelings for her change. Gradually, the baron falls in love with the young woman and proposes marriage.

A woman suffering from multiple sclerosis pleads with doctors to kill her. Her husband gives her a fatal overdose, and is put on trial, where arguments are put forth that prolonging life is sometimes contrary to nature, and that death is a right as well as a duty. The film shows Bismarck being dismissed by Wilhelm II of Germany and the dilettantes who surround him. An unscrupulous schemer plays on the king's desire to lead and so persuades him to the dismissal. This results in a disastrous two-front war by destroying Bismarck's treaty with Russia and leaving him to lament with the question of who would complete his work.
