Synopsis
Mahesh inherits enormous wealth after his father's death. Surrounded by sycophantic friends, he whiles away his life in pursuit of pleasure, caring little about the huge industrial estate his father has left behind as his legacy. With no one keeping a check on them, the corrupt employees of the company siphon off huge amounts for their own benefit.Actors

Babu and Malik are two inseparable friends who live in a small town in India. One day they decide to play a prank and steal something but get caught. While Malik's dad came to bail out and stand as surety for him, Babu has no one to do so and ends up in the juvenile centre. When the two grow up, Malik becomes a Police Inspector, while Babu takes to crime and ends up in jail. When he is released from the jail, he goes to meet his partner-in-crime, Bali, and together they start planning the next heist. Malik meets Babu and tells him to straighten his ways. But Babu had already tried that and ended up being falsely accused of stealing a necklace belonging to his employer's wife. Nevertheless, Babu does inform Bali that he will not be taking part in any crime. Thereafter, Bali and his men are arrested and they blame Babu for ratting on them. Bali is released on bail. When Babu meets him, an argument ensues leading to a fight and Bali is killed. A fearful Babu flees Bombay and lands up in Jogendra Nagar in Northern India, where he meets a man named Bhagat who asks him to masquerade as Kundan, the sole heir of a wealthy man named Shahji. When Babu refuses, Bhagat threatens to notify the Police. Babu becomes Kundan and makes his way into the hearts of Shahji, his wife Rukmani and daughter Maya. Babu gets enough cash to pay off Bhagat in small installments but Bhagat becomes greedy and wants Babu to steal all the cash and jewellery and abscond. Babu is reluctant to steal from the kind people. To make matters worse, he has fallen in love with Maya - apparently his 'sister'. Caught between a rock and a hard place - no matter what move Babu makes - he will surely end up trapping himself - not only with Bhagat, but with his new found family as well as the police - who are now hot on his trail.

The film is a light-hearted comic love story, wherein Sunil Dutt falls in love with a 'phool' (flower) Waheeda Rehman but has to impress her four uncles, the 'kante' (thorns) of the title. Each uncle has a different idiosyncrasy and Sunil Dutt pretends to be an expert in that field in order to impress that particular uncle. The four uncles select their protégé for their niece, not knowing that each is selecting the same boy. Ajay Mehra (Joy Mukherjee) is on a secret mission to Kashmir to counter Kashmir rebels right after Independence. While on mission he is injured due to a bomb blast. A young girl Asha (Sadhana) from a poor family is forced to flee for her own safety following an attack on her house by Kashmir rebels. She comes across Ajay who is injured. She nurses him back to health over a period of time and they start falling in love with each other. But after the bomb blast, Ajay has lost his memory. Hence they both decide to go to Srinagar to get treatment for him at a hospital. But Ajay gets some clue from his things and decides to go to Bombay to find the truth about himself.

Sewakram lives a middle-classed lifestyle in Bombay (India) along with his wife Subhagi, daughter Nirmala and son Lattoo. He works in the Flora Fountain branch of the United Commercial Bank. He is very organized, thrifty and plans to get his children educated, married and also build a house for them. Nirmala befriends Kishore Kumar Shastri, who lives a wealthy lifestyle along with his widower dad, a Deputy, and runs two businesses for supply of sand and cement. Kishore manages to impress everyone in Nirmala's family including her paternal uncle Sadhuram. Sewakram goes to meet Kishore to finalize their marriage and after doing so, he returns to the construction site and is gravely injured when an entire floor collapses. Nirmala finds out that the accident was Kishore's fault and refuses to have to do anything with him. Kishore attempts to woo her back but before he could succeed he is arrested by the police and held in a cell.

Wealthy and pampered Rajiv Lal (Shammi Kapoor) is the only son of widowed Rani Maa. At the silver jubilee anniversary of the mill that his father, the late Sanjiv Lal opened, he announces a bonus of 5 lakh rupees for all the workers, annoying his mother. A servant at the house, Karuna (Mridula Rani), suggests marrying him off to stop his immature antics, to which Rani Maa agrees. Her manager, Shyamlal, arranges for her to meet some girls, as she insists that Rajiv will marry a girl of her choice. Rajiv returns home and sees all the girls - he correctly surmises that his mother is getting him married, and he pretends to be a mute who walks with a limp in order to chase all the prospective suitors off. His plan succeeds, although he is in a dilemma as his mother is furious at him. One of his friends suggests that he should go away to their bungalow in Kashmir - after all, Rani Maa never goes there.
