The film was produced by SP Thamizharasi under the production banner "SPT Films". The film stars Sivakumar, Sujatha in lead roles with Sreekanth, Thengai Srinivasan and SV Subbiah playing supporting roles. The film's story was written by R. Selvaraj and the screenplay, dialogues and lyrics were written by Panchu Arunachalam. A. Somasundaram and Kandasamy handled cinematography and editing respectively.
The film revolves around Annakili who falls in love with teacher Thyagarajan. Due to circumstances, Thyagarajan marries another girl. Azhagappan, a womaniser creates misunderstanding about Annakili among villagers, rest of the film shows how Annakili proves her innocence. The film was released on 14 May 1976 with a reel length of 3,654 metres (11,988 ft) and became a commercial success at box office. The film was screened at Indian Panorama Film Festival in 1978.
The film's soundtrack was composed by Ilaiyaraaja who made his debut as composer with this film.

The film opens with the birth of Baba (Rajinikanth), who is a 'baba amsa sambhootudu'. Baba grows up as an atheist, hot-blooded man but a Good Samaritan. His life style includes consuming alcohol, smoking substances, chewing tobacco. His mother (Sujatha) and his maternal uncle (M. N. Kavitha (Sujatha) is a working woman in a middle-class family. She works hard to support her widowed sister, unmarried sister, her blind younger brother, her mother, her drunkard brother Murthy (Jaiganesh) and his family. Her father abandons the family and becomes a saint. Her brother not only does not take responsibilities, but also creates additional problems for her. She has a longtime boyfriend of five years, Tilak (Vijayakumar) who wants to marry her, but she doesn't because of her commitment to her family. His eyes now wander to Kavitha's widowed younger sister Bharathi (Sripriya) who reciprocates his feelings. Kavitha, after reading her boyfriend's love letter to her sister, arranges for them to get married, thus giving up her chance of having a life with him. Meanwhile, Prasad (Kamalahasan) loves Bharathi, Kavitha's sister; but when he comes to know that she loves Tilak, he sacrifices his love for her and marries Kavitha's distressed friend, Chandra (Fatafat Jayalaxmi). Kavitha eventually accepts a marriage proposal of her boss (Gokulnath), when she realizes that her brother has become responsible enough to take care of her family. She decides to resign from the hard work, but could not as the result of a turning point in a typical Balachandar-style climax. Kavitha swaps her unmarried sister as the bride in her stead, as she is informed of Murthy's death minutes before. In the end she resumes her job and continues to support the family.

Ajith Kumar (as Jeeva), who lives with his grandmother in Madurai, says he would marry the girl he likes at first sight. He goes to Chennai after getting a job as a bank manager there. In a shopping mall, he gets a glimpse of Simran (as Divya) and promptly falls in love. He identifies her scooter model and soon he goes on a mission in search of her to end up in a colony surrounded by comedians (Goundamani, Senthil, Venniradai Moorthy, Dhamu, Kovai Sarala). The colony people mistakenly thought that Jeeva is trying to steal the scooter and therefore he lied that he was looking for a house to rent. Then, he agreed to stay in the colony after conforming that Divya and her mother, Sujatha (as Janaki) is residing in the colony.
