Bahar (Hindi: बहार; English: The spring season or happiness) is a 1951 Hindi Black-and-white social guidance film written and directed by M. V. Raman. It was a remake of the 1949 South Indian blockbuster film Vazhkai. The film starred by Vyjayanthimala in her Bollywood debut, Karan Dewan, Pandari Bai in the lead with Pran, Om Prakash, Leela Mishra, Sunder, Tabassum, Indira Acharya and Chaman Puri forms an ensemble cast. The film was produced by A. V. Meiyappan with his production company, AVM. The music was composed by S. D. Burman with lyrics provided by Rajendra Krishan, while the editing was done by K. Shankarand and M. V. Raman and the camera was handled by T. Muthuswamy. The story revolves around Lata, Vasant and Malti.

Synopsis

The story revolves around Lata who lives a wealthy lifestyle with her parents and they would like her to get married to wealthy Shekhar she initially approves it. Shortly thereafter she meets with Vasant Kumar and both fall in love with each other and get married. Heart broken and angry Shekhar starts to investigate Vasant's background. Finds out that Vasant's real name is Ashok, an editor for a magazine. What happens in Ashok or Vasant Kumar life?

Deepak (Bharat Bhushan) lives as a tenant in a small room, owned by his landlord Om Prakash Munshi(Om Prakash). Although he is a poet, he is unable to secure any employment. One day he meets with Jyoti (Vyjayanthimala) and both fall in love. After their marriage, there is considerable resentment, and Jyoti's brother, Shekar (Ashok Kumar) refuses to have to do anything with Jyoti. When Shekar offers money to Deepak, Deepak refuses to accept it. Shekar and Jyoti's dad, Daya Shankar (Badri Prasad) sympathises with Jyoti and wants her to be the sole heir to his property after his death. In the meantime, Om Prakash marries his son to a wealthy woman, who does bring in a lot of dowry, but refuses to do any household work, and instead puts her father-in-law to work. As Deepak is unable to get employment, Jyoti is successful in getting employment as a singer on the local radio station, not knowing that Deepak is resentful of her success, and is thinking of separating from her.

Raj Raibahadur (Raj Kapoor) lives a wealthy lifestyle with his father, a widowed businessman. One day Raj is sent to work at the countryside Saraswati Dam. His father one day visits him and tells him how his deceased mother wished that he be married to Chandra (played by Vijayalaxmi), the daughter of his rich family friend. Raj decides to write a letter to Chandra which she completely ignores. But Chandra's younger sister Neelu (Nargis) acknowledges the letter and responds to it in Chandra's name. After few letters Raj and Neelu fall in love, but Raj is still unaware that it is Neelu who writes to him. Just then Raj is diagnosed with tuberculosis, the same disease that killed his mother. Raj decides to pretend that he never loved Neelu and also insists that she should marry his physician friend, Dr. Kailash (Pran). He also flirts with Chandra to make Neelu believe that he does not love her. Chandra decides to end the suffering of her sister, who is sobbing for her love-loss. Upon learning the truth, Neelu accepts Raj as he is. Miraculously, Raj also turns well and both lead for a happy life.

Vicky Kapoor (Amitabh Bachchan), the only son of multi-millionaire industrialist, Amarnath (Pran), grows up to be an alcoholic, a spoilt brat but with a good heart. Lala Gulabchand (Dewan Sharar), is a Punjabi and his wife is from Uttar Pradesh. They live at the corner of a crossroads with three lights and four roads. He is a firm believer in national unity and has had five of his six sons, each married to a girl from a different state; a Marathi, Sindhi, Bengali, Tamil and a Gujarati. His sixth son Ramesh (Karan Dewan), works in the press and is a writer and an artist. He is a bachelor but falls in love with a woman named Kokila whose singing he hears on the radio. He draws a portrait of Kokila from imagination just listening to her sing. Unbeknownst to him, Kokila, called Shyama (Sandhya), is the dark-complexioned maid who works in their home and is proficient in all the different languages that the wives of the brothers' speak and very efficient in her chores. However, he rejects her as she's dark and Shyama leaves the house despondent. The turmoil the household goes through with the absence of Shyama and a repentant Ramesh finally makes for a happy ending by everyone getting together again.

The story is about King Karma Dev who gives a lot of importance to physical beauty. His mother the Rajmata requests Mahamantri Munjal to find him a nice wife. Karma Dev often dreams of marrying an unknown beautiful woman he had once seen in the Somnath temple. Meanwhile Mrinalla is the princess of Karnataka who also dreams of marrying a king she had once seen in the Somnath temple. When Munjal happens to see the beautiful woman Mrinalla, he shows the King's portrait to her and she is happy to finally find the man of her dreams. So she runs away from the palace and searches for Karma Dev to marry him. Soon after, Munjal shows Mrinalla's painting to Karma Dev, who agrees to marry her. On the day of the marriage, the King finds out she is dark and refuses to marry her. After several incidents Karma Dev realizes his mistake and at last he happily accepts Mrinalla as his Patrani.

Two young men Jeevandas and Shankar inherit a substantial area of farmland on their late father Ramswaroop Lal's passing. Jeevandas marries Bhagvanti but are childless, while Shankar marries Parvati and they have two sons, Govind and Shyam. Govind becomes paralysed in his right hand due to an accident (electric shock). Many years in the future, Shyam leaves to become educated in the city but on returning finds the family split in two by disagreement and bitterness; Jeevandas, Bhagvanti, Shyam, Navrangi, and Neelima on one side, and Govind, his wife, Radha, Shankar, and Parvati on the other. Navrangi loans money from Bhagvanti and invests it in a Carnival, but most of his earnings are stolen by two dancers, Jati and Sati. He then borrows more money, this time from Shyam, to purchase an elephant. Govind and Radha soon celebrate the birth of a completely healthy baby boy, Navjeevandas Lal. Later, Navrangi intends to begin staging a show using the elephant at the carnival where a boy is thrown from the trunk, and he intends using Govind's son. Later, Navjeevandas is abducted by Navrangi. Govind and Radha get to the carnival, save Navjeevandas. Navrangi attacks Govind, but surprisingly, Govind is snapped out of paralysis and fights Navrangi. Moments when Navrangi is about to kill Govind and Shyam, Jeevandas and the rest of the famiy intervene and discover that he started the division of their home. Later, Navrangi is arrested and Govind and Shyam tear down the wall that separated the house. In the end, Jeevandas recites a prayer with the rest of the family united.
