Add to a movie listCoda is a 1987 Australian thriller directed by Craig Lahiff who described it as "very much a telefilm. I suppose it's very Hitchcocky - and de Palma inspired." It was the first of three films Lahiff had arranged finance for which were made in succession.
It was shot on location at Flinders University on 16mm and features women in all the lead roles.

The film opens with a montage of scenes of daily life in Australia in the 1970s: a rural school in the desert, the main street of an outback town, a traffic jam in the city, all being affected by unusually adverse weather conditions that suddenly appear. After an aboriginal tomb is opened by archaeologist (Arthur Dignam), his daughter, a doctor (Penny Cook) treats a young aboriginal girl (Kristina Nehm) in a hospital emergency room for some unspecified injury.The girl dies and immediately afterwards the attending doctor begins to have bad dreams and waking visions of a horrible past event in aboriginal history.These threatening images from the Dreamtime involve a group of whalers who came ashore two centuries earlier to rape and murder a defenseless aboriginal tribe. This event formed a taint or stain within the Dreaming. Now incorporated into the spiritual landscape, the evil spirits of these murderers roam the imaginal realm seeking whom they may destroy. They have set their sights on the doctor, who is led to solve the mystery of the slaughter of the aboriginal tribe.

A hobo (Rutger Hauer) arrives by boxcar in Hope Town, its welcome sign repainted to read "Scum Town". Scum Town is ruled by a man known as "The Drake" (Brian Downey) and his sadistic, murderous sons Ivan (Nick Bateman) and Slick (Gregory Smith). Just as he arrives, the Hobo witnesses an amateur film maker (Pasha Ebrahimi) shooting a "Bumfight" movie. While pushing his shopping cart of recyclables through the streets, he sees a distressed, bloodied man wearing a manhole cover stockade screaming for assistance. Two cars approach the man revealing Ivan, Slick and The Drake. An argument ensues and it is revealed the man in the stockade is The Drake's younger and disliked brother, Logan (Robb Wells). The Drake explains to the townspeople that his brother will serve as an example of his control and carries out the public decapitation of Logan with a barbed-wire noose attached to The Drake's truck.
