It is a dramatic piece that takes place on the day two brothers discover their mother has abandoned the family. This film is notable as it was the first time Field adapted Dubus' work to film. The next time would be for his Academy Award nominated feature debut, In the Bedroom, which was based on Dubus' short story, Killings. Years after Field's graduation from the AFI, Delivering continued to be screened in the classroom.

Sarah Pierce (Kate Winslet) is a hapless, stay-at-home mother in a small suburban Boston community. She had been working on a doctorate in English, but set aside her work to marry Richard (Gregg Edelman) and raise their 3-year-old daughter, Lucy (Sadie Goldstein). Her marriage falls apart when she discovers that Richard is addicted to online pornography. The film is set in the Mid-Coast town of Camden, Maine. Matt (Tom Wilkinson) and Ruth Fowler (Sissy Spacek) enjoy a happy marriage and a good relationship with their son Frank (Nick Stahl), a recent college graduate who has come home for the summer. Frank has fallen in love with an older woman with children, Natalie Strout (Marisa Tomei).
