Synopsis
Edward Morrison vient d'Amérique du Sud à Londres, pour rendre visite à sa sœur Alice. Mais arrivée chez elle, il trouve une nouvelle locataire, Janet Winters. Elle lui apprend qu'Alice s'est suicidée en se jetant sous un camion. Morrison l'interroge ainsi que des témoins. Le principal témoin oculaire, Sam Hotkins, pense qu'elle a été assassinée. En discutant avec Harry Brenton, son ancien fiancé, Morrisson se fait une meilleure idée. la piste le mène à un bar où il rencontre entre autres, la barmaid Myrna Collins, le propriétaire du bar Gaston, les employés Dan Low et John Evans. Tout le monde semble suspect, une tentative d'assassinat de Dan Low contre Morrison le confirme. Janet Winters est danseuse dans cet établissement, Morrison l'interroge chez elle sans rien apprendre. Morrison, qui est soutenue par Mary, la fille de Sam Hotkins, découvre le corps de Winters assassinée. Soudain le téléphone sonne. Alice dit être à l'autre bout du fil, dans une maison de campagne, elle ne peut pas en dire plus. Avec la police et l'inspecteur Brown, Morrison et Mary Hotkins pensent avoir trouvé cette maison et y rencontrent David Stone. Morrison soupçonne que son épouse Edna a quelque chose à voir avec l'affaire. Elle tient une école de danse dans laquelle Alice a pris des cours. Morrisson part pour Paris, car David Stone est mort au moulin de Garascon. Il y croise de nouveau la bande d'Evans. Encore une fois, il échappe de justesse à une tentative d'assassinat. Après la dénonciation de Donald Rutley, l'oncle de Janet Winters, Morrisson peut finalement découvrir toute la vérité.Actors

Angleterre, dans les années 1920. M. Barret, un notaire, doit se rendre à Brighton le plus rapidement possible pour régler une affaire de la plus haute importance. À cause d'un violent orage, leur voiture s'enlise dans un chantier et ils sont obligés de s’abriter dans un lugubre chalet tenu par Uriat et sa vieille mère, une spirite capable de parler avec les morts. Le petit hôtel ressemble à une maison hantée car l'électricité et le téléphone sont coupés. La mère d'Uriat propose à leurs invités de participer à une séance de spiritisme. Mais celle-ci prend une tournure inattendue lorsque le passé trouble des cinq voyageurs est révélé. Ils ont tous responsables de la mort de trois personnes et elles réclament désormais vengeance contre eux.

The ruins of Fossoway Abbey are supposed to conceal the legendary treasure of the Chelford family, sought by Harry Chelford, last of his line, with fanatical zeal. Due to a hereditary disease, he is liable to fall victim to insanity at any time. His fiancee, Leslie Gine, is more attracted to Dick Alford, Harry's cousin and steward at Chelford Manor. Meanwhile, her brother Arthur, a London lawyer is being blackmailed by his chief clerk Gilder, who wants Leslie for himself. Gilder has purchased some bills of exchange on which Arthur forged the signature of Lord Chelford to pay for his own gambling debts. There is also the 'Black Abbot', a mysterious figure who is seen moving about in the old ruin and supposedly guards the treasure. Inspector Puddler of Scotland Yard and his assistant Horatio are called in when a man is found stabbed to death and they try to solve the mystery. Among the suspects is the butler Fortuna who Puddler recognizes as a former inmate of Dartmoor prison. Mary Wenner, who used to be secretary of Lord Chelford (and an aspirant to become his wife), joins forces with Gilder to find the treasure. They manage to discover some scroll cases containing maps of the abbey but are driven off by the Black Abbot. They later return to find the maps gone. Wenner is shot and killed by Arthur Gine, who himself is later killed in a confrontation with Gilder. Leslie Gine calls off the wedding with Lord Chelford. Lord Chelford, plagued by his deteriorating sanity completely loses his grip on reality when he encounters his mother (whom he believes to be dead) in the grounds of the manor. Lord Chelford shoots his mother and the Black Abbot, takes Leslie as a hostage and hides with her in the tunnels beneath the abbey after also killing Gilder. It turns out there have been two Black Abbots: one was the butler working as an agent for Gilder, the other was Alford, working with the family doctor Loxon to care for the insane Lady Chelford whom they had kept hidden from her son. There is a shoot-out with the police and Lord Chelford is killed by a cave-in. Among the stones falling on the last Lord Chelford are some chests that contain the treasure.

In an unnamed small British colony on the west coast of Africa, somewhat resembling The Gambia, two policemen patrolling a wharf sight a sack of peanuts dropped by stevedores. As the sack breaks the workers discover a pouch in it that is quickly grabbed by a man who then runs away. The policemen chase him and he eventually kills one of them before disappearing. Police Commissioner Sanders (Todd) questions Pearson (Bill Brewer), a suspected criminal, but finds no information.
