The movie was known in production as The Ultimate Show. The producers claimed they managed to recoup half the amount of money they spent on the film.

At the start of the film, the US Government has ordered a branch of the US Military to discontinue tests concerning "the C.H.U.D. project", which is built around the idea that enzymes taken from the sewer dwelling creatures from C.H.U.D. can make hyper-effective killing machines in the army. Born with two stomachs, Patrick Smash (Bruce Cook) is uncontrollably and devastatingly flatulent. No more than thirty seconds after his birth, he first broke wind, horrifying his parents (Bronagh Gallagher, and Victor McGuire) and doctor (Robert Hardy). As he grew up, Patrick's farts became so uncontrollable and destructive that his father had to flee their home, as he was often injured by the sheer power of his son's awesome gaseous emissions, whose force is so strong that it can blow people over. During a holiday with his grandmother Helga in Norway, nine-year-old American boy Luke Eveshim is told stories about "real" witches, who are demonic females with a genocidal hatred for children due to emitting a foul odor that only they can smell. Helga tells him of a story where her childhood friend was taken and cursed to spend the rest of her life trapped inside a painting. The story is set in modern Korea. The Match Girl wanders the streets, trying to sell her matches. No one will buy any, and stores kick her out. Set in Germany sometime in the late 18th century where Mytyl (Shirley Temple), the bratty daughter of a woodcutter (Russell Hicks), finds a unique bird in the Royal Forest and selfishly refuses to give it to her sick friend. To accompany them, the fairy magically transforms their dog Tylo (Eddie Collins), cat Tylette (Gale Sondergaard), and lantern ("Light") into human form. The children have a number of adventures, visiting the past and their dead grandparents who come to life because they are being remembered, a scary adventure in the forest, the life of luxury, and the future, a land of yet-to-be born children. The dream journey makes Mytyl awake as a kinder and gentler girl who has learned to appreciate all the comforts and joys of her home and family. In the morning, the Father receives word that a truce has been called and he does not have to go to war.

Alain Durieux est dépressif. Il consulte le docteur Valois qui lui prescrit une nouvelle thérapie née de ses recherches : le « flashage ». Il s'agit, pour tout résumer, de ' couper le nerf de l'émotion '. Durieux renaît à la vie, une vie toute rose dont il ne perçoit définitivement plus la moindre grisaille. Un monstre est né autour duquel le malheur fait la ronde. On apprend bientôt que les " flashés " sont assez pour former une communauté, leur bonheur radieux fait des envieux. Les postulants sont désormais innombrables. Valois mesure l'horreur de son invention. Lâchement, et pour ne pas se désavouer, il choisit de se flasher aussi. Une forme de suicide puisque le Dr Valois connaît les effets desastreux de son traitement. L'épouse de Durieux devait y passer à son tour, mais dans un premier temps refusera : "je ne veux pas être heureuse". Durieux, victime d'un accident,une chute dans l’escalier alors qu’il est repoussé par Jeanne , ne quittera plus son fauteuil roulant ultra perfectionné mais roulera mieux encore leur ménage à trois dans une félicité immuable, la tête vide de toute angoisse, de tout doute, de toute sensibilité.À la demande d’Alain accidenté et paralysé, Jeanne accepte finalement que Pierre s’occupe d’elle ,ce qui sous entend entre autre d'être flashée. Le Dr Valois acceptera les honneurs , la légion d’honneur, ainsi que son cobaye Alain paralysé, l'ordre national du mérite, sans révéler que Pierre est devenu un monstre insensible et les singes sujets de ses expériences, tout à coup agressifs. Rares sont ceux qui sont conscients du désastre.
