Iraqi Odyssey is a 2014 Swiss documentary film directed by Samir. It was one of seven films shortlisted by Switzerland to be their submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards. On 27 August 2015 it was selected to represent Switzerland for the Foreign Language Oscar.

Synopsis

Des bombes, la guerre, des barbus en colère, des femmes voilées en pleurs, des villes détruites: l’Irak d’aujourd’hui dans les médias occidentaux. En comparaison, les images des années 1950 et 1970 forment un contraste étonnant: des films à la musique frivole, des étudiantes tête nue; des hommes élégamment vêtus dans les rues de Bagdad, une ville moderne. Comment en est-on arrivé là? Le réalisateur Samir raconte l’histoire de sa famille iraquienne, une famille de la classe moyenne aujourd’hui dispersée dans le monde entier, entre Auckland, Moscou, Paris, Londres et Buffalo NY.

The plot is loosely connected to the documental stories published in Jim Corbett's 1944 bestselling book Man-Eaters of Kumaon. Narrator of the film is Jim Corbett. In the film, Corbett, who is portrayed by Christopher Heyerdahl, is asked to kill a man-eating tiger who killed a young woman in Kumaon. Corbett arrives to Kumaon and meets with local people. The sister (Mishra Smriti) of the victim takes Corbett to the killing site. They together ambush the man-eater and Corbett kills the tiger from the machan. During this plot, the narration (by Corbett) contains stories of the history of India and the Kumaon region, as well as the efforts to save Indian tigers.
