It was one of eight films shortlisted by Germany to be their submission for the Academy Award for Best Foreign Language Film at the 88th Academy Awards, but it lost out to Labyrinth of Lies.
Synopsis
Fonceur, tenace et plein de ressources, Jack, dix ans à peine, est déjà seul responsable de sa famille : son petit frère Manuel, six ans, et leur mère célibataire aimante, mais totalement immature, Sanna, qui travaille la journée et fait la fête la nuit. Mais cet homme de la maison en culottes courtes n’est pas infaillible et un événement va venir bouleverser le quotidien de ce trio. Les services de protection de l’enfance décident alors de retirer la garde des deux garçons à la jeune femme et de placer Jack dans un centre d’hébergement..Actors

Jack est un garçon d'une dizaine d'années qui vit à Berlin. Il n'a pas connu son père et a un demi-frère, Manuel, âgé de 6 ans, d'un autre père, lui aussi absent. Leur mère, Sanna, qui travaille épisodiquement dans le milieu musical underground est plutôt immature et volage, peu apte à gérer cette famille décomposée. As a little boy Andy is severely mistreated by his father until the man leaves the small family for good. Left alone with her son, the mother forces Andy into incestuous acts. Short Eyes is set in an unnamed prison in New York City, whose inmates are predominantly black or Puerto Rican. One day, Clark Davis, a young, middle-class white man accused of raping a young girl, arrive. His fellow prisoners immediately turn on him — pedophiles are considered the lowest form of prison life — except for Juan, one of the institution's older prisoners, who treats him with dignity. Reggie Dunlop (Paul Newman) is the aging player-coach of the Charlestown Chiefs hockey team in the fictional Federal League. A perennial loser for years, the team's manager Joe McGrath (Strother Martin) has resorted to extreme cost-cutting techniques and embarrassing promotional antics to keep local interest alive. Dunlop, while not particularly talented as either a player or coach, is a skilled con man, and regularly manipulates the team to his own advantage. During a hopeless season, the Chiefs pick up the Hanson Brothers, bespectacled violent goons with childlike mentalities, complete with toys in their luggage. Horrified at being given players who seem stupid, immature, and unreliable, Dunlop initially chooses not to play them.
