Jeevan Dhaara is a 1982 Indian Bollywood film directed by Tatineni Rama Rao. The film is a remake of the 1974 Tamil film Aval Oru Thodar Kathai. The film stars Rekha, Raj Babbar, Amol Palekar, Sulochana Latkar, Simple Kapadia and Rakesh Roshan. The movie belongs to Art Cinema genre, also known as Parallel Cinema. Rekha received a nomination for Filmfare Best Actress Award, the only nomination for the film. She is credited with the film's box office success.

Synopsis

Sangeeta (Rekha) is a young, strong and idealistic girl. She is 25 years old, but unlike her contemporaries, she is still not married. The reason for this is her being a member of a poor family. Her father left the family; Her mother is an old homemaker; Her younger sister Geeta (Madhu Kapoor) is a young widow; Her nephews have to go to school while their father, her brother (Raj Babbar) is an inebriated and unemployed man. All the members of this family live in one little house. She is the only one who takes care of them. She is the only one who works to support the family. She is concerned for her nephews' future and makes her best to bring them up and educate them.

The story revolves around Dharamraj "Dada" Thakur (Anil Kapoor). Since the death of his father Ghajraj Thakur(Rajinikanth), Dada Thakur has been the head of the village. Retired and widowed judge Umakant Verma (Ashok Kumar) lives a wealthy lifestyle with his only son, Dr. Shashikant (Jeetendra). Gauri (Rekha), the daughter of Umakant's childhood friend, Narayan Singh (A.K. Hangal), is the lead servant in the house, but she has never been treated as a servant but rather as a family member. However, before she gives birth, she finds out that Shashikant has been seeing his former girlfriend Krishna (Asha Sachdev), not understanding that he is treating her sick daughter. One night, Krishna calls the house seeking Sashikant's help for her daughter. Gauri, who receives the call and suspects an affair, refuses to relay the message to Sashikant. Consequently, Krishna's daughter dies. An intense rift happens between Gauri and Shashikant, and Gauri leaves the house. Angry about how Gauri was responsible for Krishna's daughter's death, he does not let her take their son with her. Ravikant is brought up by his father, while Gauri gives birth to another son, Umakant (Arun Govil), and does her best to bring him up. The story follows the separate individual lives of Shashikant and Gauri and their two children.

Malati (Rati Agnihotri), a young girl from a middle-class family meets Suresh Ray (Mithun Chakraborty), who is the son of a well-known lawyer Dayashankar Ray (Danny Denzongpa). After dating each other for some time, she finds that she is pregnant. When Suresh refuses to marry Malati, and she decides against aborting the baby, her parents throw her out and disown her. Left alone, she decides to take Suresh to court. She is supported in this fight by Shakuntala (Rekha), a lawyer who works for woman's rights, who also has an illegitimate daughter from Dayashankar Ray. The case gets much publicity and public support, and the judge rules in Malati's favor. At this point however, Malati refuses to marry Suresh and decides to raise the child on her own. In the meantime, Shakuntala dies of a heart attack, and Malati promises her to take care of her daughter, and carry on Shakuntala's work.

Dr.Sandeep Kumar (Jeetendra), Inspector Ranjith (Rajinikanth) & Advocate Prakash (Rishi Kapoor) are thickest, best & childhood friends, the three of them grew up together because Prakash is often and Ranjith’s father Daga (Amrish Puri) is a smuggler who left him alone because of his honesty and took his mother & sister with him so Sandeep’s parents (Pran & Shavukar Janaki) brought them up. Ranjith is an honest police officer, Sandeep is a well known doctor in the city, Prakash is a leading criminal lawyer three of them has always clash with Daga who became a big gangster and doesn’t know that Ranjith is his son. Ranjith & Prakash always carrels with Sandeep because the only problem with Sandeep is he is very short temper, he cannot withstand himself if somebody does any injustice to anyone. One day Daga’s gangster (Guru Bachan) kidnaps and rapes Ranjith’s wife Lata (Poonam Dhillon) who is pregnant which is seen by Sandeep and he bits him very hard and takes promise from Lata that she does not reveal this secret. Daga takes advantage of this he kills the gangster and traps Sandeep in that case. Ranjith arrests Sandeep and Prakash takes up the case but Sandeep doesn’t reveal the truth to protect Lata so Prakash makes a story that Sandeep has made the crime to protect his wife to save him, he brings a girl Rekha (Bhanu Priya) as Sandeep’s wife whom Sandeep has protected from few gangsters once a while. Meanwhile Sandeep loves and really marries Rekha and Prakash also loves a thief Shanthi (Kimi Katkar) whose brother is killed by Daga and for whom she is under search. At the end Ranjith comes know the truth, he accepts Lata even though she got raped and he recognizes Daga is his father and Rekha is his sister whom Daga left in streets in the childhood. Finally Sandeep, Ranjith & Prakash join together and defeat Daga.
