Synopsis

In the Tamil Country of the 50s... Thangaraj (MGR) and Jeeva (Sivaji Ganesan) are friends.

Aalavanthan (Sivaji Ganesan) is a graduate who works hard for the poor farmers in his village and opposes the Zamindar Azhagu Singam (S. V. Ramadas) rule . In the opening sequence, jailed former labor leader Nataraj (M. G. Ramachandran) is telling his cellmates about the suffering his family endured as a result of uncle Ponnambalam (K. Sarangapani) betraying his fellow Indians in order to help the British. Nataraj tells of how Ponnambalam murdered his father, swindled his mother of her meager savings and forced her sister Leela (P. K. Saraswathi) into marriage. Nataraj hunts down and kills his uncle, which lands him in jail to tell his story.

The film commences with friends and family of an ailing village head, Malaichami (Sivaji Ganesan), gathered around him on his death bed. The plot then moves along in a series of flashbacks, featuring significant episodes of the dying man's life. These include the presence of a boatman's young daughter Kuyil (Radha) in his village. The protagonist is unhappily married to a shrewish wife by the name of Ponnatha (Vadivukkarasi), and seeks comfort and solace in a friendship with Kuyil.
