Deux enfants prennent un livre dans une poubelle. Ils commencent à lire l'histoire d'un quartier pauvre de la ville de Mexico. Le charpentier Pepe "El Toro" (Pedro Infante) vit avec sa fille adoptive "Chachita" (Evita Muñoz) et fait la cour à la jolie Celia, connue comme "La Chorreada" (Blanca Estela Pavón). Autour d'eux, un groupe de gens vivent leur vie de nombreuses façons différentes: il y a une paire de femmes toujours ivres, connues comme "La Tostada" (La Grillée) et "La Guayaba" (La Goyave); une belle femme (Katy Jurado) qui dort tout le temps, surnommée "La que se levanta" tarde (Celle qui se réveille tard); et une mystérieuse prostituée nommée "La Tisica" (Celle qui est montée), qui souffre de tuberculose et qui a un sombre passé.

At the beginning of the film, there is a young man who decides to become a soldier to defend Mexico from an incoming invasion by the French army. After enlisting, he fell in love with a young lady, but it turns out that she is the niece of the French ambassador to Mexico. In one battle where the Mexican forces were near the brink of defeat, the soldier, Luis, decides to grab a trumpet and play the song "Mexicanos, al grito de guerra", the National Anthem of Mexico. Upon hearing the anthem played, the soldiers rally and overcome the French forces. However, Luis is shot and dies in the end at the same time his love escapes imprisonment.

Two kids take a book from a trash can. They begin to read the story of a poor neighborhood in Mexico City. Carpenter Pepe "El Toro" (Pedro Infante) lives with his adopted daughter "Chachita" (Evita Muñoz) and woos pretty Celia, known as "La Chorreada" (Blanca Estela Pavón). Around them, a group of people live their lives in many different ways: a pair of always-drunk women are known as "La Tostada" (Toasted") and La Guayaba" (Guava); a beautiful woman (Katy Jurado) who's a sleepy-head La que se levanta tarde (The one who wakes up late); and a mysterious hooker nick named: La Tisica ("TB ridden one") with tuberculosis and a dark past.
