The story begins in a register office where Malavika (Nandana) waits for her lover Anand(Krishna) to come and register their marriage. She is accompanied by photographer Joji (Kunchako Boban) to cover the function. But when Anand does not turn up Malavika is forced to go with Joji. Taking sympathy on her, Joji helps her to get a hotel room, which leads to more trouble for them. Cops arrest them during a raid in the hotel and Joji's girlfriend Anu (Preetha Vijayakumar) comes to know about this. To make things worse Joji lies to the police that Malavka is his wife and they are let free. The film is a journey through the minds of Mohanakrishnan, a fashion photographer living in Kochi. Palamattathu Varghese Mappila (Saikumar) is a wealthy Nasrani and retired captain from the Indian Army. He has four children, Christy (Mohanlal), Joji (Dileep), Jessy (Lakshmi Gopalaswamy) and Stella (Kanika). Christy is a high profile police informer who is working in Mumbai and getting high amounts as remuneration. His brother Joji goes to Italy to study theology, but later opts out of it after he falls in love with Meenakshi (Kavya Madhavan), daughter of the state home minister (Devan). His family has no clear idea about the nature of Christy's activities before Christy's brother-in-law tells a lie about him as Christy finds about brother-in-law's relationship between rowdies and cases which he was arrested for sex-racketing . All these come as a shock to Varghese Mappila. Varghese Mappila kicks Christy out of their house believing the brother-in-law. Joji is having a relationship with Meenakshi. The story revolves around Ajayan (Mohanlal), who, after having tried his luck in different cities around the world, comes back to his village to look after his ageing mother Ammukutty Amma (Sheela) and to get her love and the nostalgia of his growing up years. There, he starts a company for producing agricultural equipment and earns his living as a farmer. One day a boy comes and meets Ajayan claiming to be his son. Ajayan used to boast himself as a womanizer in his youth is believed to be the boy's father by all villagers. Ammukutty Amma starts getting to like the boy and they form a very friendly relation and eventually she starts accepting the boy as Ajayan's real son, though Ajayan ferociously reject the boy's claim and dislikes him. Vidyalakshmi (Mamta Mohandas), scion of a rich Hindu aristocratic family gets married to Shanavas (Asif Ali), a Muslim, against the diktats of both the families. Though, happily married, life is not a smooth ride for them. Few years passed by and the couple now has a daughter Laya, who is now in nursery. Despite strong financial troubles, Shanavas does his best to take care of his family. One rainy night, on his way to purchase mangoes for his daughter, Shanavas is killed by a group of goon, mistaking him to be someone else. Having nowhere to go, Vidyalakshmi is trying her best to take care of her daughter. But, the financial troubles forces her to cut down the daily expenses, including the school bus for her daughter. Within short time, she is asked to vacate the house, as there has been a long delay in payment of rent. Vidyalakshmi, with nowhere to go, decides to sleep on railway platform with her daughter. One fine morning, she catches an auto to drop her kid at school. Preman (Jayaram), the auto driver is a talkative and simple chap, with a sense of humor. But after travelling, she gets out of the auto and escapes without paying the cash. The next day, Preman finds her at railway station, and on demanding the auto fare, she explains her story to him, which makes him feel sympathetic to her. He brings Vidyalakshmi and her daughter to his colony. Vidyalakshmi, within short time captures the hearts of the people around. When Preman comes to know that she was doing her MBBS when got married and had to give up studies after that, he makes her to appear of final year exam. With the support of the colony residents, Vidyalakshmi appears of MBBS examination and becomes a doctor. Her daughter, one day comes in contact with the mother of Shanavas, who wants now her grand daughter to be brought to home. But Vidyalakshmi politely refuses it. The elder brother of Shanavas threatens her with the support of a Moulavi, but Preman intervenes and force them to go back. With the help of her friend, Vidhyalakkshmi gets a job in Kuwait and though not willing, she had to accept it. She leaves to Kuwait with her daughter, promising to come back soon. Preman is seen waiting at beach, looking for the next news from Vidyalakshmi.
