Synopsis
Ravi (Rajesh Khanna) is a well educated guy but hasn't got a job yet. Unlike others, he doesn't find any job big or small…he just takes up anything that comes his way. The movie opens showing him delivering Newspapers at people's doors – but the job is not permanent. He likes painting and usually makes paintings that depict village life…on being asked by his friend he says city life is very mechanical and he doesn't like it.Actors

Kusum as a child gets married to Vrindavan in a small ceremony. After some time her father dies in a riot and blame erroneously comes to Vrindavan's father. Due to this, Vrindavan's father rejects Kusum to be his daughter-in-law. Kusum along with his brother and mother, moves to different village away from Vrindavan's family.Now they grow up and Kusum(now Hema Malini) considers herself as the wife of Vrindavan and rejects to marry anyone else. Eventually her mother dies and her brother Kunj (Asrani) stays single as he don't want to marry till he send his sister to in-laws. On the other side, Vrindavan's (now Jeetendra) father dies and he becomes a doctor. Oblivious to Kusum's feelings, he goes on to marry another girl Lakhi (Sharmila Tagore), who was also a victim of child marriage and has no one now. They had a son Charan (master Raju) and Lakhi dies after some time due to illness. He moves to his own village and starts practice there. Once, he happens to visit a wealthy patient in Kusum's village where Kusum recognizes him, though he fails to as he only knows her pet name, not real name. Gradually they come closer and Vrindavan's mother is happy to accept Kusum as daughter-in-law. But misunderstandings develop because Kusum considers them insensitive as they not only forgot what they have done to her family but also takes her for granted now. But Vrindavan, having soft corner for her still wishes that she would come to him. Kusum grows close to his son Charan and keeps him with her during endemic in Vrindavan's village. Finally, Vrindavan and Kusum are able to overcome egoistic barriers and unite with the blessings of her brother, Vrindavan's mother and little Charan.

Karan Singh lives a wealthy lifestyle in a palace along with his widowed mother, an elder brother, Shamsher, his wife and daughter. His mother, Rani Maa, spending most of her time playing cards, left his upbringing to his nanny. As a result, Karan ended up believing her to be his real mother. Now grown up and turned into a womanizer and an alcoholic, he comes to the rescue of a former air hostess, Lata, who is being molested by her boss. Widowed Lala Yodhraj Bhalla (Anupam Kher) lives in a palatial house with his daughter, Suman (Hema Malini), and son, Shashiraj (Raj Babbar). Both of his children are of marriageable age. He gets a shock when he finds out that Suman is in love with a lowly employee by the name of Ajit Bhardwaj (Rajesh Khanna), and refuses to give his consent for their marriage. Suman and Ajit get married in a simple ceremony, and Suman moves to Ajit's house, where she soon gets pregnant and gives birth to a son who they name Vikram alias Vicky (Rishi Kapoor). Yodhraj gets another shock when Shashiraj tells him that he would like to marry Rita (Moushmi Chatterjee), who comes from a poor family. Yodhraj asks Shashiraj to go for a trip out of town in his private air-plane. With Shashiraj out of the way, Yodhraj goes to a pregnant Rita and asks her never to see Shashiraj again and leaves a blank cheque with her. The very same day, Shashiraj is killed when his plane crashes; a guilt-ridden Suman moves back into her father's house along with Vikram, leaving Ajit alone and devastated; and a lone Rita gives birth to a young son named Arjun (Anil Kapoor). Twenty five years later, Yodhraj still lives in his palatial house with Suman and Vikram. A grown-up Arjun lives with his adopted father Inder Sen (Saeed Jaffrey) after the death of his mother Rita. An amendment in Independent India comes where kingdoms are seized and people from Royal family are no longer rulers. One such kingdom is about to be seized from Vipin Kumar who refuses to lose his position. He continues to rule the jurisdiction as king and compels people to pay tax to him. People protest against this and one such person is police Inspector Dhirendra Singh (Rajesh Khanna). Because of this, he is transferred to a small village. His parents arrange his marriage with Janki (Hema) who is the daughter of Dhirendra's father's childhood friend. But Janki is in love with Manu Pratap Singh (Dharmendra).
