Synopsis
L'inspecteur Higgins est chargé de retrouver un assassin qui a tué une élève d'un pensionnat de jeunes filles avec un mélange d'acide et de gaz toxiques. Scotland Yard's Inspector Higgins (Joachim Fuchsberger) becomes involved in a case that began with the corpse of Sir Oliver supposedly laughing from inside of his own coffin during his funeral. Soon people who were close to Sir Oliver start to get killed. Sir Oliver's brother Sir Cecil swears he saw his dead brother jaunting around the countryside in a skeleton costume. Higgins teams up with reporter Peggy Brand (Siw Mattson) and his bumbling chief Sir Arthur (Hubert von Meyerinck) to unmask the villain who is killing people with a poisoned scorpion ring.

Le baron Holberg est fier d'être le descendant d'une famille qui tient sa noblesse dans l'art du vol. Ses objets préférés sont les colliers des riches dames. Le riche Sir Cyrus Bradley est victime d'un chantage du syndicat du crime « La Tortue ». Alsconi, le chef, dans un fauteuil roulant, qui vit dans un manoir richement meublé à Trieste, ordonne à sa maîtresse Laura Lorelli et à son confident Crantor de s'occuper du meurtre de Bradley s'il ne paie pas. À Londres, ils engagent le lanceur de couteau Shapiro, qui tue Bradley. Alors que Crantor doit aussi éliminer Don Micklem, l'héritier de Bradley, un jeune étudiant, Laura l'avertit par téléphone, si bien que l'attaque échoue. Alsconi lui dit qu'il serait stupide d'éliminer Don, qu'il est l'héritier après tout. Alsconi voudrait plutôt essayer d'obtenir de lui ce que Bradley lui a refusé. Peu de temps après, Don n'est pas entièrement entre les mains d'Alsconi. Le patron dit au jeune homme que Laura lui a sauvé la vie pour la deuxième fois. Alsconi vient rapidement au point qu'il ne libérera Don que contre une rançon de 500 000 DM. Le jeune étudiant, cependant, lui fait clairement comprendre qu'il serait probablement tué de toute façon, alors plutôt sans rançon.

1969. In a Vienna bookshop the Argentine chemist Rafaelo Aranda is poisoned by the bookseller Valerie Steinfeld. The bookseller commits suicide immediately afterwards. It seems the bookseller has never met him before. The chemist's son, Manuel Aranda, wants to find out the background of this murder. He finds out that his father has developed chemical weapons of mass destruction and offered to sell them to the United States, the Soviet Union and France. The Secret Services of these countries try to prevent Aranda from publishing these facts. Aranda survives a first sniper attack without even noticing it.

After the rich Lord Lebanon has been strangled, a group of different characters assembles at Mark's Priory, his lonely manor in the north of Scotland, to attend the reading of his will. However, as lawyer Frank Tanner explains—in reading a "second-to-last-will"—to the potential heirs, they will first have to stay together at the manor for six days and six nights. Thinking that Lebanon has died of heart failure they all agree. It turns out to be a dangerous requirement as the manor is cut off from the outside world by a storm and one by one the visitors are murdered—strangled with an Indian scarf. In the end, of all the guests, family and staff only Tanner, Isla Harris and Bonwit the butler survive. The last will is read and it is revealed that Lord Lebanon has in fact left all his money to the man he considered to be the greatest of the century: Edgar Wallace.
