Add to a movie listThe Grasshopper and the Ants is a 1934 American animated short film produced by Walt Disney Productions and released by United Artists. Part of the Silly Symphonies series, the film is an adaptation of The Ant and the Grasshopper, one of Aesop's Fables. It was directed by Wilfred Jackson and stars Pinto Colvig as the voice of the grasshopper "Hop."
The film introduced the song "The World Owes Me a Living" (later "I Owe the World a Living") by Leigh Harline which later became associated with the character Goofy who was also voiced by Colvig. According to Leonard Maltin on the Walt Disney Treasures: Silly Symphonies DVD, this was an early example of the idea of having a character turn blue with cold, when full-spectrum Technicolor was still new at the time.
Synopsis
It all starts out when the grasshopper is dancing, playing his violin, and eating. After he sat on a mushroom, he got some water and started to eat a leaf. Then he noticed some ants working very hard to get ready for the cold winter. All he just did was laugh at those poor ants. Then he went to an ant who had his fruit cart stuck, and told him "the Good Book says 'The Lord provides,' there's food on every tree. I see no reason to worry and work. No sir, not me! Oh, The World Owes Us a Livin'. Oh, The World Owes Us a Livin'. You should soil your Sunday pants, like those other foolish ants. Come on, let's play and sing and dance!". And they did, but while they were doing that, the Queen ant came and saw one of her subjects playing instead of working. Once the ant noticed the queen, he started to go back to work. Then the Queen ant got mad at the grasshopper and warned him "You'll change that tune when winter comes and the ground is covered with snow." The grasshopper ignored the queen's warning, saying "Oh, wintertime's a long way off. You dance? Let's go.Actors

Mickey et ses amis sont à une fête. Tandis que Minnie joue du piano, accompagnée de Clarabelle au violon, Mickey, Dingo et Horace sont en cuisine. Mickey est joueur de piano dans un bar de la région du Klondike au Canada. Il porte secours à Minnie, choquée et à moitié frigorifiée. Arrive alors en trombe Pegleg Pierre, fraîchement descendu de son traîneau, qui après un affrontement au pistolet, kidnappe Minnie. Mickey le poursuit à bord de son traineau, trainé par Pluto. Pegleg Pierre parvient à sa cabane et s'y retranche. La bataille se poursuit, Mickey assiégeant le kidnappeur. Pendant ce temps, Pluto, qui était parti à la poursuite d'un lapin qui habite à proximité, provoque la formation d'une énorme boule de neige, qui finalement détruit la cabane et capture le ravisseur.

Mickey Mouse appears as a street performer playing Adeste Fideles on a cello while Pluto howls along. Several passers-by appear to throw coins in Mickey's collection cup and Mickey wishes them a merry Christmas. But when Mickey goes to buy food, he discovers his cup is full of nails, nuts, and bolts. Mickey est à nouveau dans sa ferme. Il utilise Pluto comme plantoir mais deux corbeaux mangent les graines après leur passage. Pluto les pourchasse jusque dans l'épouvantail et s'y retrouve coincé. Pendant ce temps Minnie trait une vache entourée par des oies. Mickey décide de faire peur à Minnie en revêtant le costume d'épouvantail juché sur Pluto. Le pantalon tombe et révèle à Minnie le subterfuge. Elle utilise un râteau pour bloquer les deux trublions. Mickey chute et tombe dans le panier de linge. Il se retrouve habillé avec une jupe à damier. Minnie se moque de lui mais il transforme la jupe en un kilt en utilisant un pinceau pour faire l'escarcelle et les oies comme une cornemuse. Minnie danse alors suivie par les animaux de la ferme et du voisinage.
