Synopsis

Des machinations sont exercées par d'"infâmes" agents étrangers auprès de la population allemande. Grâce à une annonce dans un journal, les agents de l'ennemi Morris et Geyer entrent en contact avec le concepteur Brockau qui a développé un nouveau gazéificateur de pétrole brut. Brockau a besoin d'argent car Marion, sa petite amie avide, le poussé à s'endetter de plus en plus.

Novembre 1918. L'Allemagne va perdre la Première Guerre mondiale. Les régiments de cavalerie doivent accomplir un long périple entre la Russie et la frontière allemande. L'excellent cavalier von Brenken reçoit l'ordre de faire entrer une division pour apporter de l'aide dans la région dominée par les brigades polonaises. Une balle atteint son cheval Harro, ce qui le fait tomber dans le sol boueux. Pendant quelques heures, il reste inconscient. Il est alors secouru par une sentinelle allemande.

The film starts with Mary Stuart, Queen of Scots, held prisoner in Fotheringhay Castle, awaiting the final judgement in her case, which is expected within a few hours. Soon she finds out that the Royal Court has sentenced her, with the assent of Queen Elizabeth I, to be executed on the scaffold on the following day. She breaks down and remembers the events leading to her now imminent death. The bulk of the film consists of this flashback.

During World War I, young Ellen Lange runs away from her boarding school in Hamburg, because she cannot stand its strict rules any longer, and escapes to her brother Rolf, who lives in Kiel. Rolf, a vice-helmsman by profession, is not too enthusiastic about Ellen's arrival, because he has to go to England in secret orders. So he tries to convince her to go back to her boarding school, and when they both separate at the station, he is convinced that she will do so. But Ellen is unwilling to give up her new freedom again, so she takes another train to Berlin instead. During the journey, she meets a young girl that promises to help her find a job in Berlin. She also provides Ellen with the address of "Aunt Jenny", a dubios lady that finally gets her a job in a music store. After her three months of probation, Mr. Hansen, her boss, orders Ellen to bring a precious violin to Copenhagen. He also provides her with a false passport, as Ellen does not have any identity papers.
