Thunaivan (English: Companion) is a 1969 Indian Tamil drama film directed by M. A. Thirumugam. The film stars A. V. M. Rajan and Sowkar Janaki in lead roles while Major Sundararajan, Nagesh, Sachu, Vennira Aadai Nirmala and K. B. Sundarambal play supporting roles. Sri Devi made her acting debut with this film in the role of little Lord Muruga. This film was halfly taken in Black & White and Eastman color.

Synopsis

Velayutham, (A. V. M. Rajan) is an orphan who gets his two square meals daily by ringing the bell at a Murugan Temple. His honesty is questioned when a precious stone from the idol of Lord Muruga is found missing. Dissillutioned and angry, Velayutham leaves for Coimbatore. After overcoming many hurdles, he finds Paramasivam (Nagesh), a well wishes, who gives him a job as a fruit-seller. Due to his good nature, fortune favours him and Velayutham becomes a rich businessman. He marries Maragatham (Sowkar Janaki) who is a loving wife, but does not share his religious beliefs. They often argue about this. The final straw of the story is when the couple is blessed with a child, but handicapped by birth. Velayutham continues to believe that Lord Muruga will bring his child back to normal but Maragatham only believes in consulting the best doctor. The doctor couldn't do anything. Maragatham's father Major Sundararajan advised her to believe in god. Distressed, Maragathan step out from her believes and took the child to all the murugan temples. She was deeply praying for her child. At climax, Kirupananda Variyar and K.P.Sundarambal assamble with them in the temple singing and praying to god. Sri Devi as little Lord Muruga comes and bless the child.

Gopal (Sivaji Ganesan) is a rich businessman en route to India from Singapore on a cruise ship. He meets Latha (Saroja Devi), another traveller who has been accompanied by her father Ramadurai (V. K. Ramasamy). Gopal and Latha find that they like each other, so Gopal invites them to stay at his palatial mansion in Ooty, which they accept. One day, Latha discovers that Gopal gets agitated whenever he sees an onrushing train and demands the reason for it. Gopal explains that the reason behind this is his first wife.

Kovalan, the son of a wealthy merchant in Kaveripattinam, married Kannagi, the lovely daughter of another merchant. They lived together happily in the city of Kaveripattinam, until Kovalan met the courtesan Madhavi and fell in love with her. In his infatuation, he left his wife Kannagi and gradually spent all his wealth on the dancer. At last, penniless, Kovalan realised his mistake, and returned to Kannagi after a year. Gopinath (Gemini Ganesan) falls in love with Janaki (Sowcar Janaki) and they get married in Kasi. The marriage is not accepted by Gopinath's mother and the couple gets separated. Janaki is pregnant and her father (V. S. Raghavan), realizing that no man will marry Janaki a second time, decides to make her a collector. Gopinath meanwhile had moved to South India, where he later married Jaya (Jayanthi) by hiding his previous marriage. They live a happy life with their three children and Jaya's father. Gopinath works as a clerk in the collector's office. A new collector arrives at the office, and it turns out to be Janaki. They tend to work together and Nagesh spreads a rumour across stating that there is an affair between Janaki and Gopinath. This rumour reaches Jaya and she is completely disturbed. Jaya discovers the secret of Gopinath's affair with Janaki. Meanwhile the sons of both Janaki and Jaya, Ramu and Prabhakar drowned in water and have been admitted to Hospital. Somehow Jaya manages the disturbance of the secret and accepts Janaki as her sister. But Ramu dies in hospital while Prabhakar survives. Jaya gives Janaki her son as a gift. Janaki and Prabhakar leave for abroad as Janaki got her duty abroad.

A middle-class joint family is living happily run by the responsible father Ethiraj, a retired headmaster. He has three sons – Maheshwaran, Raman, and Krishnan. Maheswaran is a Hindi professor, married to Parvathi and they have 5 children. Raman, a clerk in high-court is married to Sita and they have two children. Krishnan, a medical representative is married to Rukmani. Apart from them, Sumathi, the younger sister of Sita also stays in the same house, as she is pursuing higher studies in the same city. Though it’s a joint family, the father has set up his three sons in three different portions in the same house, and takes turns to eat in each of his son’s house, to avoid any possibility of problems between them. The sons give their salaries to their father, and all the financial matters are dealt by him efficiently. He is respected and feared by everyone in the family. Wrong-doers in the house-hold are made to stand on a bench by him as punishment.
