Nima (Rekha) and Balraj Kohli (Shashi Kapoor) are happily married middle aged couple, living in rich neighborhood of Mumbai. They have two boys,eldest was Sagar(Raj Kiran) and youngest was Babbu. Things seem to go smoothly and Sagar falls in love with medico Sarita (Poonam Dhillon), who easily gains the approval of Sagar's parents. Slowly story reveals that Nima was Balraj's second wife and not actually the biological mother of Sagar. Balraj was the husband of Sharada (Raakhee) who was elder sister of Nima. When Nima lost her husband in an accident, immediately after her marriage, shocked Sharada falls off the stairs, damaging her head. She had been in a mental institute since 14 years. As Balraj had no one to manage his household in the absence of Sharada, Nima stays there to look after Balraj and seven year old Sagar. Seven years after the accident, Sharada and Nima's father, hopeless of Sharada's recovery, convinces Balraj and Nima to get married.

The film places the story in Kolkata. As the credits roll, scenes from erstwhile Calcutta are displayed along with the narrator's (Amitabh Bachchan) introduction of the era. The narration focuses on the night of the marriage of Shekhar and Gayatri Tantiya, a rich industrialist's daughter. The audience is introduced to Navin Rai as Shekhar's father while we see Shekhar readying himself for the occasion. While he is doing so, images of Lalita calling him by his name flash through his mind. Downstairs, musical celebrations begin as Shekhar meets Vasundhara, a widow from his neighbourhood, who is thankful to her son-in-law, Girish (Sanjay Dutt), for supporting their family after the death of her husband, Gurcharan. Lalita, who is present there, playfully confronts Shekhar as to why he is being indifferent to her. Shekhar admonishes her for speaking so in spite of being married.

Ram (Jeetendra) and Sadhana (Rekha) are a married couple. They live a wealthy lifestyle together. Ram is a graduate, and works as an administrator in a multinational company and earns well. Their marriage comes to an end when Ram betrays Sadhana with her best friend Urvashi. Ram confesses the truth as he gets drunk, and tries to explain himself, and even Sadhna's family tries to convince her to condone this one little mistake, but Sadhana cannot forgive him his unfaithfulness and she divorces Ram. After their divorce, Sadhana finds out that she is pregnant. She moves into her new home. Ten years later, they meet each other in a bus and Ram is the new manager of the office where Sadhna works. Coincidentally, Ram's new house is close to Sadhana's in the same neighborhood. Now when they're neighbours, Ram tries to captivate her again and return his family and wife. Raibahadur Satpal Singh (Nazir Husain) is killed cold-blooded in a remote village. He is survived by his twin daughters Rekha & Rashmi (both played by Rekha). Rekha manages their business with the help of their chief estate manager Deewan (A. K. Hangal) along with his son and factory manager Kishore (Danny). Rashmi and Kishore are in love with each other which displeases Rekha, who sends Rashmi abroad to attend a painting course. On the other hand, Rekha too is disinterested about her marriage. Meanwhile, driving through their estate, Rekha's car breaks down and is helped by Prem (Shashi Kapoor), with a golden hand for such machines. After a few meets, both fall in love with each other. After a few days, Rekha announces her engagement with Prem to the surprise of everyone around. She also wills to assign the entire estate to Rashmi before engagement. During the engagement, when Rekha's Police Inspector friend Vikas shows up to wish the couple for the occasion, Prem is suspiciously found missing. The next evening, the couple go out to spend private time on a house-boat anchored in a lake on their estate. Later in the stormy night, Rekha finds Prem missing from the boat and starts looking for him. While searching, someone pushes her in the lake, but not before Rekha glimpses the shadow of this person. Everyone at the estate is surprised with the news of Rekha's death. Meanwhile, she survives and reaches the house of her friend Pinky (Aruna Irani). Once there, Rekha learns about Rashmi's arrival for Rekha' funeral, and both plan to investigate the incident. On the other hand, Kishore, Prem and the Police too start their investigation separately to unmask the killer. Meanwhile, when Rashmi (Rekha disguised) meets him, Prem discloses the intense love for Rekha. She finds quite a few on her suspect list. Kishore wills to go to any extent to marry Rashmi. Prem for his suspicious movements. The staff at their estate, like the cook (Jagdeep), house keeper Ambu (Lalita Pawar) et al. The story progresses and after a few thrilling sequences, the murderer is revealed in the climax.

This is a story about two guys who act as mock witnesses and always hang around court to give evidence as per the requirement of the case every time. They have never believed in God but eventually they have to accept the power of God. Ahmed and Mohan Kumar Saxena are petty thieves, and con-men. They career is spent as false witnesses near the Bombay courts, where they get paid a set sum of rupees for false depositions. This changes when they meet and are influenced by Kabir Das, and decide to go straight. They find that it's virtually impossible to earn a living as honest citizens. Then Kabir Das is arrested and imprisoned by a murder he claims he did not commit, and the duo promise to help him, and find out who the real killer is, but they themselves end up getting in trouble.

Shalini 'Shalu' lives a wealthy lifestyle with her businessman brother, Shyam Kapoor, and is expected to marry Surajbhan, the son of wealthy Thakursaheb.
