Oliver Barrett IV comes from an American upper class east coast family and is heir to the Barrett fortune. He attends Harvard University, and is very active in ice hockey for the university. At the library, Oliver meets Jennifer "Jenny" Cavalleri, a quick-witted, working-class Radcliffe College student of classical music. She mocks him calling him "preppy" and "jock". Oliver finds a charm and truism in her comments. They quickly fall in love, despite their differences.
The rich fashion designer Julia is tired of living because she knows she is suffering from a malignant cancer. When the woman leaves for her last holiday in Cortina d'Ampezzo, she meets the young and vital Valerio. The two fall in love instantly, but Julia does not reveal her secret to Valerio. When Valerio finds out that she is sick and dying, he decides to pretend to know nothing, continuing his love affair with Julia to the end.
Cléo (played by Corinne Marchand) is a pop singer who wanders around Paris while she awaits her medical test results. As Cléo kills time until she is able to phone the doctor for her medical results in the evening, she meets with several friends and strangers while trying to grapple with her own mortality.
Murali (Kalyan Kumar) goes abroad to pursue higher studies in medicine. Unfortunately, during his tenure overseas, his girlfriend Seetha (Devika) is forced by her parents to marry another person. Devastated upon hearing the news, Murali swears a vow of lifelong celibacy and devotes himself to saving people suffering from cancer. A few years later, Venu (R. Muthuraman) happens to be critically ill with cancer and has to be operated upon. The treatment for Venu progresses well until Murali meets Venu's wife, who happens to be Seetha. When Seetha comes to know that the doctor treating Venu is Murali, whom she had left, she becomes upset.
Kanji Watanabe (Takashi Shimura) is a middle-aged man who has worked in the same monotonous bureaucratic position for thirty years. His wife is dead and his son and daughter-in-law, who live with him, seem to care mainly about Watanabe's pension and their future inheritance.

She initially ignores severe headaches and brief episodes of dizziness and double vision, but when she uncharacteristically takes a spill while riding, and then tumbles down a flight of stairs, her secretary and best friend Ann King (Geraldine Fitzgerald) insists she see the family doctor, who refers her to a specialist.
