Arthur Hiller, OC (born 22 November 1923) is a Canadian television and film director, having directed over 33 major films during his 50-year career. He began his career directing television in Canada and later in the U.S. By the late 1950s he began directing films, most often comedies. He also directed award-winning dramas and romantic subjects, such as Love Story, which was nominated for seven Oscars.
He collaborated on a number of films with award-winning screenwriters Paddy Chayefsky and Neil Simon. Among his other notable films were The Americanization of Emily (1964), Tobruk (1967), The Hospital (1971), The Out-of-Towners (1970), Plaza Suite (1971), The Man in the Glass Booth (1975) and The In-Laws (1979).
Hiller served as president of the Directors Guild of America from 1989 to 1993 and president of the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences from 1993 to 1997. He was the recipient of the Jean Hersholt Humanitarian Award in 2002. An annual film festival in Hiller's honor was held from 2006 until 2009 at his alma mater, Victoria School of Performing and Visual Arts. Biography
Arthur Hiller est navigateur dans l'Armée de l'air canadienne durant la Seconde Guerre mondiale. Ensuite, il étudie la psychologie à l'Université de Toronto avant d'amorcer une carrière de metteur en scène à la télévision, d'abord à Toronto, puis à Hollywood. En 1957, il réalise son premier film The Careless Years.
Cinéaste prolifique, il aborde divers genres comme le film de guerre (Tobrouk, commando pour l'enfer), la biographie (The Babe) ou le drame psychologique (Making Love). Mais c'est surtout dans la comédie qu'il s'illustre le plus avec des films comme Les Jeux de l'amour et de la guerre, Escapade à New York, Plaza Suite (ces deux derniers inspirés de Neil Simon), Transamerica Express et Ne tirez pas sur le dentiste. Son plus gros succès commercial est indubitablement Love Story.
Il a été président de la Directors Guild of America de 1989 à 1993 et de l'Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences de 1993 à 1997. Il a également été nommé officier de l'ordre du Canada en 2007. Il a par ailleurs fait quelques apparitions comme acteur.
Il meurt le 17 août 2016 à Los Angeles de causes naturelles.
