Amleto Novelli (18 October 1885 – 16 April 1924) was an Italian film actor of the silent era. He appeared in 110 films between 1909 and 1924.

Biography

Amleto Novelli est né à Bologne en 1885 mais déménage rapidement à Rome. Il débute comme acteur au théâtre en 1906 et est engagé par la maison de production cinématographique Cines. Il interprète plus de cent films et meurt à Turin le 16 avril 1924 d'une encéphalite léthargique à l'âge de trente-huit ans, pendant le tournage du film de Mario Camerini La casa dei pulcini. Il est enterré à Rome au Cimetière communal monumental de Campo Verano.

Son épouse Adalgisa Orlandini est également une actrice.

The film is based on the poem by Torquato Tasso, and is set in the time of the Crusades in Jerusalem. The commander Godfrey of Bouillon, Christian blessed by the pope, is attacking the Holy City for years, with no win. In fact, his work is to free the Holy Sepulchre of Christ from the hands of the Muslim infidels. The best soldier of Godfrey is Tancredi, who during a battle collides with a Muslim soldier. Even this soldier is very strong, but Tancredi turns out that he a girl, called Clorinda. The two fall in love, while war rages; but unfortunately their love does not last long, because the witch Armida, faithful Muslims, creates a spell that makes confobdere mind to Tancredi and Clorinda, who fight in war against each other.

Le film, adapté de la pièce de théâtre La Marche nuptiale (1905) d'Henry Bataille, narre l'histoire de Grâce de Plassans (Borelli), jeune femme de famille noble mais désargentée. Ayant reçu une éducation chrétienne, elle se croit une vocation religieuse : on la découvre troublée par ses élans mystiques lors de ses heures pianistiques. Elle s'éprend de son professeur de piano, Claude Morillot (Amleto Novelli), lorsqu'ils jouent à quatre mains La Marche nuptiale de Felix Mendelssohn. Si celui montre un caractère aimable, il n'en reste pas moins de caractère faible, de talent médiocre et surtout d'un milieu social très inférieur au sien. Face au refus par ses parents d'un mariage, Grâce rompt avec sa famille pour suivre son aimé et reste quelque temps héroïque à ses côtés dans l'adversité. Le destin semble se montrer plus clément lorsqu'elle rencontre son ancienne amie Suzanne, mariée au banquier Roger Le Chatelier, qui engage Claude. Lorsque Grâce exprime son souhait d'avoir un piano, Claude subtilise de l'argent dans une caisse appartenant au riche couple. Grâce est consternée et déprimée par cet acte vil. Elle retrouve joie pour un instant quand, rejoignant le riche couple, elle espère une romance avec Roger. Mais elle retourne finalement vers Claude. Elle éprouve un autre éphémère moment de joie lorsque celui-ci joue encore une fois La Marche nuptiale. Puis, soudainement, on entend un violent coup de feu : Grâce s'est suicidée.
