Guy Maddin, OM, CM (born February 28, 1956) is a Canadian screen-writer, director, author, cinematographer and film editor of both features and short films, as well as an installation artist, from Winnipeg, Manitoba. His most distinctive quality is his penchant for recreating the look and style of silent or early-sound-era films. Since completing his first film in 1985, Maddin has become one of Canada's most well-known and celebrated film-makers.
Maddin has directed ten feature films and numerous short films, in addition to publishing three books and creating a host of installation art projects. A number of Maddin's recent films began as or developed from installation art projects, and his books also relate to his film work. Maddin has been the subject of much critical praise and academic attention, including two books of interviews with Maddin and two book-length academic studies of his work. Maddin was appointed to the Order of Canada, the country's highest civilian honour, in 2012.

Maddin explore aussi une veine plus autobiographique (son « autobiographie fantasmée »), avec des films comme Et les lâches s'agenouillent... (2003), Des trous dans la tête (2006), ou encore le faux documentaire Winnipeg mon amour (2007).
En 1995, Guy Maddin reçoit la très convoitée Telluride Medal au Festival du film de Telluride pour l'ensemble de son œuvre. Cette récompense a été décernée à des cinéastes tels qu'Abel Gance, Francis Ford Coppola, Andreï Tarkovski ou Clint Eastwood.
En 2011, Guy Maddin passe du support argentique au numérique avec le film Ulysse, souviens-toi ! (Keyhole).
En 2012, Guy Maddin organise avec le Centre Georges Pompidou à Paris du 22 février au 12 mars 2012 une performance artistique reconstituant le tournage de films « fantômes » dans une proposition intitulée Spiritismes.

Guy Maddin, loin d'être prédestiné au septième art, exerce d'abord le métier de guichetier dans une banque, puis celui de peintre en bâtiment. Il se lance en 1986 dans la réalisation de son premier court métrage, The Dead Father, déjà empreint de son esthétique originale (voire expérimentale) : usage du noir et blanc, image salie à la manière des vieilles bandes des années 1920, décors artificiels semi-mythiques...Sans budgets importants, Guy Maddin réussit à imposer une œuvre fortement dépaysante, à la fois poétique, lyrique, surréaliste et personnelle, mêlant une imagination débordante aux plus profonds désirs non-refoulés.
