John Farris, né en 1936 à Jefferson City dans le Missouri aux États-Unis, est un écrivain et un dramaturge américain, auteur de roman noir et de roman d’horreur. Il signe également des romans sous le pseudonyme Steve Brackeen
En 1959, il fait paraître Harrison High, premier volume d'une série de cinq romans très prisée par la jeunesse américaine. Ce premier roman est adapté au cinéma sous le titre Because They're Young dans une réalisation de Paul Wendkos.
Par la suite, son œuvre relève de l'épouvante ou du policier fantastique traitant notamment de la télépathie et des pouvoirs supra-normaux. En 1976, il écrit The Fury dont il signera l'adaptation pour le film de Brian De Palma Furie.
En 1967, sa pièce de théâtre The Death of the Well-Loved Boy est produite à Broadway.

En 1956, il publie son premier roman La Porte d'à côté (The Corpse Next Door). Puis, en 1957, il aborde le roman noir avec The Body on the Beach qu'il signe Steve Brackeen. Sous ce pseudonyme, il publie cinq romans dont en 1958 En férocité (Baby Moll) qui selon Claude Mesplède et Jean-Jacques Schleret rappelle Pendez-moi haut et court de Geoffrey Homes et en 1959 Nid de rats (Danger in my Blood).En 1959, il fait paraître Harrison High, premier volume d'une série de cinq romans très prisée par la jeunesse américaine. Peter Sandza (Kirk Douglas), a former CIA agent, is searching for his son Robin, who was kidnapped by a secret intelligence organization inside the CIA led by Ben Childress. This organization kidnaps psychics to turn them into weapons in the service of the United States government. To better control the psychics, they also kill their families. Peter survived the attempt on his life, but his son believes he was killed by Arab terrorists.
