Peter Hein is a fight master/action choreographer, stunt coordinator who has worked on many South Indian films. He became famous for his action sequences in films such as Sivaji (2007), Anniyan (2008), Ghajini (2008), Magadheera (2009), Enthiran (2010), Raavanan (2010), 7aum Arivu (2011), Kochadaiyaan (2014) and Baahubali (2015). He has been nominated for the noted Taurus World Stunt Award against many big Hollywood names. He received a Filmfare Award for Best Action for his work in Ghajini (2008 film). Stunt masters such as Anal Arasu and Silva have worked as fighters and assistants to him.

Ashwin Kumar (Jiiva) is a photojournalist working for the private newspaper Dina Anjal. He witnesses Naxalites robbing a local bank. He chases them and manages to click photos of the robbers. When he tries to escape, he is stopped by a young woman Renuka 'renu' (Karthika Nair) who assumes he is the culprit and helps the robbers to take his camera. However, he is able to secure the memory card of the camera. The police catch him, and to prove that he is a press photographer, he shows the photos to the them, who identify everyone except the gang leader (whose face is covered by a mask). At his office, he again meets Renuka, who has newly joined as Article Editor. Saraswathi 'saro' (Piaa Bajpai) also works in his office and has feelings for Ashwin, who does not reciprocate.

Saravanan's (Dhanush) parents manage to send him to Singapore after having gone through a severe financial drought thinking that he would pay off all their debts as soon as he lands in Singapore. Saravanan finds a job in Singapore through an agent and lands there with high hopes of earning 3 lakh and sending money back to his family. Living in a cramped apartment, Saravanan gets into an argument with a Chinese immigrant there. One day, the immigrant burns Saravanan's passport and Saravanan starts fighting him. The Chinese man is killed inadvertently in the fight. Everyone thinks that Saravanan is responsible, and he flees.

The film starts off with a bank robbery, which involves 2 thieves stealing 2 crores from the local bank. However, they have a misunderstanding on talking about if they should give the money to their boss or run away with it. They both hold a gun point blank at each other. In the ancient Kingdom of Mahishmati in India, Sivagami, the queen mother (Ramya Krishnan), carrying a baby in her arms, emerges from a cave adjoining a big waterfall. Satya and Deepthi are lovers living in Vishakhapatnam. A dreaded don, Veeru Bhai, lusts for her. When Deepthi's parents are killed, she and Satya escape. They board a bus en route to Hyderabad, but the bus is stopped unexpectedly and boarded by three men: Veeru's henchman Deva, Veeru's brother Ajay, and a corrupt police inspector, Shravan. They kill Deepthi in front of Satya, and he suffers an almost-fatal stab wound. Before the three leave, they set fire to the bus, leaving Satya to his death. However, Dr. Shailaja saves Satya by giving him a new face and skin. Ten months later, Satya awakes from his coma.

A young boy named Rana, who hails from the kingdom of Kottaipattinam, leaves his family, despite his brother Sena pleading him not to do so. The boy soon meets with an accident while rowing in the river and is eventually discovered by some fishermen from the neighbouring kingdom of Kalingapuri, a rival of Kottaipattinam. Rana (Rajinikanth) grows up there and trains in weaponry, and grows up to be a fearless warrior. Due to his fighting skills and bravery, he soon wins the confidence of the king of Kalingapuri, Raja Mahendran, who promotes him as Commander-in-Chief of the Kalingapuri army. Rana's first job as Commander-in-Chief is to free the soldiers of his hometown Kottaipattinam, who are being treated as slaves, enlist them in the army and train them. He then seeks the permission of Raja Mahendran to attack Kottaipattinam, to which the latter agrees. However, during the war, Rana encounters his childhood friend, crown prince Sengodagan, the son of Rishikodagan, king of Kottaipattinam. Immediately signalling an end to the war, he, along with the soldiers disown Kalingapuri and return to Kottaipattinam, much to the disgust of Raja Mahendran and his son, crown prince Veera Mahendran, who swear revenge on Rana for tricking them and betraying Kalingapuri.

The film begins with Vizag being shown in 1980 in which a ladies college bus makes its scheduled bus stop. Krishna (Ram), standing at the bus stop, keeps looking at Srinidhi (Tamannaah), whom he loves, but doesn't express it. He has been doing that for the last three years but without any response from her. Srinidhi also likes Krishna, but does not reveal it, as she fears by doing so, she may put her family in trouble. On the last day of the college, Krishna decides to propose to her. So he disguises himself in a 'burqa' and boards the bus. However, the bus conductor recognises him and forces the bus driver to stop the bus. However, before he could stop it, the bus gets involved in an accident. Krishna saves Srinidhi from the mishap, but is killed in the process. Shocked about Krishna's death, Srinidhi dies at the grave of Krishna.

The movie begins with Bittu (Sonu Sood) planning with the local MLA Varadarajulu (Kota Srinivasa Rao) to rob ₹15 billion (US$230 million) from Vizag Co-operative Bank. Ravindra Narayan a.k.a Ravi (Allu Arjun) is a brainy individual who believes in earning quick money rather than toiling like his father Narayana Moorti (Tanikella Bharani) for every month's salary. He gets into a dispute with his father about his attitude and challenges him that he would convert ₹ 10,000 into ₹ 100,000 in quick time. He happens to meet Bittu on his way, who drops him at his destination. Ravi inadvertently reveals his plan of making quick money by betting on an IPL match and also the location of betting to Bittu and his companions on the way. However, his plans turn upside down when police raid the location and is caught red-handed. During interrogation, Ravi guesstimates that Bittu could have diverted the Police and that he is about to commit a robbery at the Vizag Cooperative Bank. He convinces ACP Raja Manikyam (Rao Ramesh) that Bittu is planning to rob the bank and both go to catch him. Bittu successfully robs the bank and his brother Laala (Shafi) takes the money to the city's dumping yard, as per Bittu's instructions, as the Police follow them. However Police catches Lala, who resists them only to be killed by Ravi. Police try to trace the money but in vain. Meanwhile, Bittu gets arrested but is rescued in transit by his sidekick Devayani (Sheetal Menon). They go to the dumping yard to collect the money, but Bittu is shocked as the dumping yard is burnt to ashes. Having his brother dead and the money burnt, Bittu decides to kill Ravi.

Ramachandran (Sachin Khedekar) is a genetic scientist who doesn't get due credit and funds for his research. The film depicts the life of Bodhidharma (Suriya), a master of martial arts and medical remedies, who is depicted in the film as the son of a great Tamil king of the Pallava Dynasty. He is sent to China by his guru, who requests him to stop the spread of a pandemic disease existing there from spreading to India. Initially the people in China treated him as an inferior but later when he cures a little girl from the deadly disease and fights against some people who ill treated villagers there, the people of China began to respect and worship him. He begins to teach them how to cure many diseases, the skills of hypnotism and the physical training of the Shaolin monks that led to the creation of Shaolinquan. However, after several years, when he expresses his desire to return to India, the villagers plot to poison him and bury him near the temple, believing that their place would be disease free if he is buried there. Bodhidharma agrees to die and subsequently becomes a fundamental figure in Chinese history, affectionately being dubbed as "Damo".
