Biography

Entré dans l'industrie du cinéma en 1933 comme assistant-réalisateur, son premier film comme producteur est Sous le masque de Malcolm St. Clair (1936, avec Peter Lorre et Brian Donlevy), au sein de la 20th Century Fox où il fera tout le reste de sa carrière.

Parmi les vingt-six autres films américains qu'il produit, citons les westerns La Poursuite infernale de John Ford (1946, avec Henry Fonda et Linda Darnell) et L'Attaque de la malle-poste d'Henry Hathaway (1951, avec Tyrone Power et Susan Hayward), la comédie musicale Papa longues jambes de Jean Negulesco (1955, avec Fred Astaire et Leslie Caron) et le péplum L'Histoire de Ruth d'Henry Koster (1960, avec Elana Eden et Stuart Whitman).

S'y ajoutent deux films britanniques, C'était son homme de Monty Banks (1938, avec Gracie Fields et Victor McLaglen) et Les Forbans de la nuit de Jules Dassin (1950, avec Richard Widmark et Gene Tierney).

Son dernier film comme producteur est Le Lion de Jack Cardiff (avec William Holden et Trevor Howard), sorti en 1962.

In 1882 (in reality, the Gunfight at the O.K. Corral happened on Oct 26, 1881), Wyatt, Morgan, Virgil, and James Earp are driving cattle to California when they cross Old Man Clanton, played by Walter Brennan. When they learn about the nearby boom town of Tombstone, the older brothers ride in, leaving the youngest brother James to watch over the cattle. In the beginning of the film, detective Charlie Chan is in Rio de Janeiro, Brazil, along with his son, Jimmy, and the Rio chief of police, Chief Souto, to arrest singer Lola Dean, whom Chan suspects killed a man in Honolulu. After a performance, Lola’s boyfriend, Carlos, asks her to marry him, which she accepts. Her personal assistant, Helen Ashby, then reminds Lola she has an appointment with a Hindu psychic, Marana. Lola visits the psychic, who puts her in a semi-comatose state using coffee and cigarettes laced with a special natural herb. Lola reveals in this state that she did kill a man, Manuel Cardozo, after he refused to marry her in Honolulu. The psychic records the conversation. When Lola wakes up, the psychic tells her what she told him, but assures her that it will be kept confidential between them. On the way home, a worried Lola convinces Carlos to elope instead of marry at a later date. When she arrives home, she begins packing.

Nick (Warner Baxter) and Ellen (Andrea Leeds) are celebrating their fifth wedding anniversary by going mountain climbing in Switzerland when Nick receives a telegram asking him to go back to Paris to assist friend Jeffrey Reynolds (Henry Wilcoxon) in setting up a new laboratory. Barbara "Ching-Ching" Stewart is an orphan living in Sanchow, China. When bandits threaten, she is sent to Shanghai for safety. Accidentally separated from her guide, Ching-Ching finds herself in Shanghai all alone with her dog until she meets a westerner, Tommy Randall, a rich playboy traveling about the world by ocean liner. Ching-Ching then accidentally becomes a stowaway on his ship. When discovered, she is provided for by Tommy and Susan Parker, a passenger on the ship engaged to the son of her traveling companion, Mrs Ruth Hope. Susan and Tommy become romantically involved. Ching-Ching plays Cupid in furthering their romance. The couple realize they adore Ching-Ching and want to do the best for her after learning she will be put off the ship and sent to an orphan's asylum. Susan breaks her engagement with Richard Hope, Ruth's son, after discovering his selfish nature and marries Tommy. The two adopt Ching-Ching.
