Add to a movie listThe Shanghai Gesture is a 1941 American film noir directed by Josef von Sternberg and starring Gene Tierney, Walter Huston, Victor Mature, and Ona Munson. It is based on a Broadway play of the same name by John Colton, which was adapted for the screen by Sternberg and produced by Arnold Pressburger for United Artists. It was the last Hollywood film Sternberg ever completed (in 1951 he started directing Macao, but was fired halfway through production by Howard Hughes, and the same thing happened with the 1957 Jet Pilot).
The Shanghai Gesture received Academy Award nominations for Best Art Direction (Boris Leven) and Best Original Music Score (Richard Hageman).
Synopsis
Gigolo "Doctor" Omar (Victor Mature) bribes the Shanghai police not to jail the broke American showgirl Dixie Pomeroy (Phyllis Brooks); he invites her to seek a job at the casino owned by Dragon-lady "Mother" Gin Sling (Ona Munson), his boss.Actors

Set in Sweden, the film is shown in flashbacks in the course of a trial in which a young woman with a half-hidden face, Anna Holm, is charged with murder. The events, as described by the witnesses, begin years before when aristocrat Torsten Barring hosts a party at a tavern. The guests include Vera, the faithless wife of noted plastic surgeon Gustaf Segert. When the tavern refuses to extend his credit, Torsten meets the proprietress Anna — whose face is badly scarred from a fire 22 years ago caused by her father. Torsten treats Anna as if she is beautiful and charming rather than scarred and unpleasant. Anna is suspicious, and Torsten implies that he may need her help in the future.

In West Dallas, Texas, 22-year-old drug dealer Chris Smith (Hirsch), desperate to pay his debt to loan sharks, decides to murder his mother, Adele, to collect the $50,000 of insurance money. He has been told by his mother's boyfriend Rex that the sole beneficiary will be Chris' younger sister Dottie (Temple). Assuming Dottie would share any money she gets with them, Chris manages to rope his dim-witted father Ansel (Haden Church) into a conspiracy to kill Adele – who is Ansel's ex-wife – to get the money. Chris also enlists the help of Joe Cooper (McConaughey), a police detective who has a side career as a contract killer. Ansel plans to split the money four ways between themselves, Dottie, and Ansel's new wife Sharla (Gershon). Dottie hears the plan as they are talking, and agrees that it's a good idea.
