Add to a movie listThe Spider's Web is a 1938 Columbia Pictures movie serial based on the popular pulp magazine character The Spider. The first episode of this 15-chapter serial was double-length and directed by serial and western specialist Ray Taylor and by comedy and serial veteran James W. Horne; it was the fifth of the 57 serials released by Columbia.
The serial was wildly successful when first released in 1938; it was the most popular serial of that year, according to a tally published in The Motion Picture Herald, and was such an exhibitor favorite that Columbia used it to launch a series of reissues in 1947. A sequel, The Spider Returns, was released in 1941; of the Spider's Web principal actors, only Warren Hull and Kenne Duncan returned in their original roles for the sequel.

Synopsis
"The Octopus," a masked crime lord, is bent on crippling America with a wave of terror. He demands tribute from railroad magnates and other captains of industry. Richard Wentworth (Warren Hull), an amateur criminologist who is friendly with the police and is secretly "The Spider," a masked vigilante, is equally determined to destroy the Octopus and his gang. Pleasant and smiling in civilian life, Wentworth is frequently ruthless as The Spider, using his two .45 automatic pistols against any public enemies who attack him.Actors

A deadly plague is ravaging the Earth, known as the Purple Death because of the spot left on victims' foreheads. Ming the Merciless is suspected to be behind the plague and it is discovered that his spaceships have been dropping "Death Dust" in the Earth's atmosphere. Flash Gordon, along with Dr. Alexis Zarkov and Dale Arden, is sent to the planet Mongo to find a possible cure for the plague. They eventually find an antidote, called polarite in the Kingdom of Frigia. Flash and Zarkov distribute the antidote the same way the original Death Dust was spread. Ming sends an army of robot bombs after the three and he succeeds in capturing Zarkov for a short time before Flash frees him.

The struggle over the Bellamy estate ends with Michael Bellamy accused of murder and killed on the way to prison, while his brother, Abel Bellamy, takes control of the estate for his own nefarious plans. Bellamy is using Garr Castle as a base for his jewelry-theft ring, and he kidnaps his brother's wife to keep things quiet. This serial shows as the trading post of Sitkawan, Canada is taken by surprise when an Indian tribe attack and massacre the settlers aboard a fur-bearing wagon train. Sergeant MacLane of the Royal Canadian Mounted Police is assigned to investigate the case. MacLane soon realise that the attackers were led by Mort Ransome, a nasty renegade, who had been conspiring with Black Bear, medicine man of the tribe, to incite the heretofore friendly tribe for his own gain. He also learns that two white renegades have kidnapped Diana Blake, daughter of the local post factor, and saves her from a runaway wagon just before it plunges over a cliff. Perils of the Royal Mounted also features stereotypically Northern genre elements including trappers, lumberjacks, trading posts, rebellious braves, forest fires, avalanches, and a wide range of dangerous wildlife.
