It was based on the 1914 play Outcast starring Elsie Ferguson. It was remade in 1922 as Outcast, starring Ferguson; in 1928 with Corinne Griffith, also titled Outcast; and with Bette Davis in 1935 as The Girl from 10th Avenue.
The film is available on DVD.

Anna-Maria Mentorsi, une prostituée, part pour quelques jours en vacances à la mer, avec sa fille Caterina. Marie, une prostituée de Marseille, rend visite, très émue, à son fils Simon qu'elle n'a pas vu depuis longtemps et dont elle a confié la garde à Gilles, un berger de la campagne provençale. Simon, âgé à présent d'une douzaine d'années, idéalise sa mère dont il ignore la profession. Marie, jugeant qu'elle est à présent suffisamment bien installée pour prendre son enfant en charge, le ramène avec elle. Mais après l'euphorie des premiers jours, Simon ne tarde pas à découvrir les activités de sa mère et à déchanter d'autant plus qu'elle s'est amourachée de Paul, un individu douteux et pleutre que Simon se met à détester, ce qui crée des dissensions entre la mère aveuglée par l'amour et le fils, clairvoyant. Afin d'échapper au milieu délétère familial, Simon, attiré par la mer, se met à fréquenter le port et sympathise avec François, un capitaine de marine marchande… Celui-ci, discernant le malaise et l'isolement du gamin, l'embauche comme mousse pendant que Marie va être entraînée au cœur d'un drame à cause de Paul fourvoyé dans une sordide affaire de faux billets.

Oreste Jacovacci from Rome and Giovanni Busacca from Milan meet each other during the call to arms at the start of World War I. Although completely different in character, they are united in their lack of idealism and their desire to avoid any danger and get out of the war unscathed. They and a varied group of civilians and fellow soldiers (including the prostitute Costantina, played by Silvana Mangano) go through many ups and downs during their training, battles and rare moments of leave. They are considered "inefficient" due to their limited military valour and so are made message-runners to the staff, a very dangerous job. Having succeeded in their mission, a sudden change in which side hold which trench leaves them in enemy territory, where they are captured by the Austrians wearing Austrian uniforms they had found in a barn.

Marina est une prostituée dont la vie est assez difficile. Son beau-père est arrêté par la Gestapo, sa mère trompe son mari et elle-même tombe sous le charme de son demi-frère. Par la suite elle assiste à l'assassinat de sa meilleure amie. Elle tombe alors amoureuse d'un peintre qui, malheureusement, est gravement malade : il a une tumeur au cerveau. Pour financer les frais de l'opération, Marina se voit contrainte de reprendre son ancien « travail ». Les deux amoureux partent alors pour l'Italie, où ils trouvent de quoi se divertir et se détendre. Finalement l'opération a lieu mais n'apportera pas de guérison définitive. Ils retournent en Autriche et passent quelques jours à Vienne. Marine aidera ensuite son ami, devenu aveugle, à mourir à l'aide de somnifères, car ses souffrances sont telles qu'il ne peut plus les supporter. Après cela, elle se suicide à son tour.

Ljubljana 2008. The time of the Slovenian presidency of the European Union. Aleksandra (Nina Ivanišin) is a 23-year-old English language student. She comes from a small town. Set against the backdrop of the 1976 election, the story is centred on delinquent teenager Iris (Sofia Karemyr), who is sent to live in a juvenile home. She meets Sonja (Josefin Asplund) there and the two regularly slip away for adventures in the city. Together they are recruited to the prostitution ring operated by Dagmar Glans (Pernilla August), a madam well-known to the authorities. Dagmar's clients are mostly rich and powerful men, including senior politicians of the day. She becomes the subject of a police investigation led by a young vice officer, John Sandberg (Simon J. Berger). Sandberg soon discovers Glans has powerful clients but also finds his investigation hampered by his superiors and his life threatened by sinister figures. Police break up the prostitution ring but the powerful clients avoid being named in the scandal and Dagmar's trial concludes with her receiving a suspended sentence before Iris can testify about being an underage prostitute. In the aftermath of the trial, Sandberg is killed in a hit and run incident and his report into the affair is classified by the newly elected government. The film ends with Iris running away from the juvenile home, her ultimate fate ambiguous.
