Years later, now that Dylan is getting married, Lynn is attending the wedding at her parents' estate, with her younger sons Elliot and Ben in town. Elliott is a cynical substance abuser and Ben prefers to look at life through a camera than confront the world head on. Meanwhile, Alice deals with her anxieties through cutting; Dylan has only infrequent contact with Lynn; Lynn is fearful of Paul and his second wife Patty; Lynn's mother, Doris, blames her daughter for her family's many troubles; and her father, Joe, is in poor health and hardly cares about what's happening around him. To the surprise of no one, all this has left Lynn an emotional wreck, and she's not sure just how she's going to get through the day., 1h48

The film starts with a brief introduction in the 19th-century American West featuring a bald eagle gliding over the homeland of the mustangs, showing several western US National Parks. There is then a scene showing the birth of a dun Kiger Mustang, Spirit. Spirit soon grows into a stallion, and assumes the role of leader of the herd, whose duty it is to keep the herd safe, demonstrated when he saves two foals from a mountain lion. Spirit is a courageous leader, but has great curiosity. Spotting a strange light one night not far from his herd, the stallion is unable to control his curiosity and moves towards it. To Spirit's surprise, he finds restrained, docile horses, and two-legs (possibly wranglers) sleeping around a campfire. They wake up, and seeing him as a magnificent specimen, chase and capture him, then drag him to a US cavalry post., 1h58
