The film's beginning has General George S. Patton (George C. Scott) giving a speech to an unseen audience of American troops (based on his speech to the Third Army), with a huge American flag in the background. The scene then shifts to North Africa at the start of 1943, where Patton takes charge of the demoralized American II Corps in North Africa after the humiliating defeat at the Battle of the Kasserine Pass. After instilling discipline in his soldiers, he leads them to victory at the Battle of El Guettar, the first American victory over the Axis, though he is bitterly disappointed to learn afterward that Erwin Rommel (Karl Michael Vogler), whom he respects greatly as a general, was not his opponent. Patton's aide, Captain Jenson, is killed in the battle. Shortly after the battle, a new member of his staff, Lieutenant Colonel Codman assures Patton that, though Rommel was absent, that if Patton defeated Rommel's plan, then he had defeated Rommel.

Dans ce film documentaire, le militant des Black Panthers Eldridge Cleaver s’exprime depuis son exil en Algérie, exil provoqué par une accusation de tentative de meurtre en Californie. Le très didactique Eldridge parle ouvertement de la révolution aux États-Unis et établit une liste de ses plus grands rivaux politiques. Les noms de Nixon, Agnew, McClelland apparaissent au même niveau que ceux de Ronald Reagan et Richard Daley. Tous sont considérés comme des cibles pour de nombreux groupes révolutionnaires aux États-Unis.

En avril 1941, pendant l'occupation, en Macédoine, une troupe bulgare d'occupation, commandée par Stepan Raiko, s'installe dans Rodoneri un village de la région de Dráma. Immédiatement, le chef du village, Manolis Devetzis, ancien compagnon d'armes de Pavlos Melas, est arrêté : les Bulgares ont un vieux contentieux à régler avec lui. Il est remplacé à la tête du village par un collaborateur, Grigoris Theofilou. Katerina, sa fille, travaille comme secrétaire des occupants bulgares. Nikos Devetzis, qui avait été amoureux de Katerina, blessé lors de l'attaque allemande est prisonnier dans un hôpital à Athènes. Quand il apprend le sort de son père, il s'évade et rejoint le village avec un de ses amis, le journaliste Vasilis Anthimos. En fait, Katerina aide la résistance dirigée par Nikos, en leur faisant passer des informations avec l'aide du pope. Le groupe de Nikos fait sauter un train bulgare. Stepan Raiko évince Grigoris Theofilou et prend seul la direction du village. Nikos découvre que Katerina est son informatrice. Il retombe amoureux d'elle. À la fin de la guerre, le groupe de Nikos chasse les Bulgares du village. Raiko est tué dans les combats.

Rosy Ryan (Sarah Miles) is on a cliff high above the Atlantic Ocean in the town of Kirrary, an isolated village on the Dingle Peninsula in County Kerry, Ireland. A gust of wind takes her parasol over the cliff and down into the ocean, where it lands next to a currach containing Father Hugh Collins (Trevor Howard) and a mentally impaired man named Michael (John Mills) who retrieves the parasol. On the beach, Michael proudly reunites Rosy with her parasol and shows her an enormous, thrashing lobster that he has caught. The townspeople play a vicious game of Keep Away with Michael and the lobster until Father Collins shames them for their abuse.

In the late 1930s, in Ferrara, a group of young friends get together for afternoons of tennis and happy times. Some of them are Jewish and a rising tide of Fascism has imposed increasingly anti-Semitic restrictions in their lives. Barred from regular tennis clubs, they go to play at the grand, walled estate owned by the Finzi-Contini, a wealthy, intellectual and sophisticated Jewish family. The two young Finzi-Contini, Alberto and his sister Micol, have organized a tennis tournament. Oblivious to the threats around them, life still seems to be sunny at the large Finzi-Contini estate, keeping the rest of the world at bay.
