Tom Ripley (Dennis Hopper) is a wealthy American living in Hamburg, Germany. He is involved in an artwork forgery scheme, in which he appears at auctions to bid on forged paintings produced by an accomplice, artificially driving up the price. At one of these auctions, he is introduced to Jonathan Zimmermann (Bruno Ganz), a picture framer who is dying of a rare and unspecified blood disease. Zimmerman refuses to shake Ripley's hand when introduced, coldly saying, "I've heard of you" before walking away.

Michelangelo Buonarroti, a sculptor from Florence, is first commissioned to craft the Pope's tomb in Rome. Instead, Pope Julius II orders him to paint frescoes on the Sistine Chapel ceiling depicting the Twelve Apostles. After his first attempt at painting the Apostles, he destroys his work and flees to Carrara to quarry Carrara marble. Through a large 19th century house and its grounds, the camera follows an art collector and an unseen interviewer. The collector has six of seven canvasses by a 19th century painter called Fredéric Tonnerre, but nobody knows what was in the fourth of the sequence because it was stolen. His quest is to recreate the missing painting and so to read the meaning of the whole series. To achieve this, he has hired models, acquired props and rigged up lighting in order to re-enact each of the six surviving scenes as a tableau vivant. Able to walk around each tableau and to adjust the light, he ponders the inner significance of the scene, speculating why the artist chose to portray it in exactly that way and what message he was signalling to the alert viewer..Tableaux we see include Diana surprised by Actaeon, Templars playing chess, a scandal among Parisian nobility, and an occult ceremony involving a sacrifice similar to that of St Sebastian. In each case the collector discerns strong sexual currents flowing between the characters, both heterosexual and homosexual. More significant, he thinks traces of an esoteric cult of Baphomet are to be seen in the pictures.

Pendant 7 ans, Dora suit au plus près la vie du génie, notamment la création du "Guernica" qu’elle photographie dans toutes ses étapes successives. Puis arrive une nouvelle femme auprès de Picasso, Françoise Gillot. Dora se retire à Ménerbes dans le Vaucluse où elle apprendra la mort de Picasso.

Griet (Scarlett Johansson) is a shy girl living in the Dutch Republic in 1665. Her father, a Delftware painter, has recently gone blind, rendering him unable to work and putting his family in a precarious financial situation. Griet works hard, almost wordlessly, in the lowest position in a harsh hierarchy, doing her best despite spiteful treatment by one of Vermeer's children. While she is on a routine shopping trip outside the house, a butcher's son, Pieter (Cillian Murphy), notices Griet and falls in love with her, even though she is slow to return his affections.
